I have been playing for a few hrs and how do you take over a city or village. Barbarians took one of mine. I select my military and click on the barbarians village but get nothing. What am i doing wrong?

A village? Like an improved cottage? You can only pillage those. Just move troops onto a city to attack cities.

I think you're talking about barbarian huts. Move on the tile where it is located with any unit. The hut will disappear and, depending on many factors, an event will take place - money, new tech, new city, map of the region, a unit will join you, or you'll be welcome by angry guys with long knives. Scout units will never, however, face those angry guys.
