Ok, guys, I need some help:

I've been using audacity for several tasks, for a while, now.

In my windows boot, it works just fine and dandy.

However, in Ubuntu Linux (alternative boot in desktop, single boot in laptop), the recording is odd. It gives me a noise, like a drum, an interference that I can't ID. Listen here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/51613105/test.mp3.html

It's funy that playing files I record from other devices, however, works fine in Audacity (even after I edit the file qualities or change their format) and any other devices, and recording also works fine with the regular “sound recorder” tool.

I tried messing around with the sound options of Audacity and of the system, to no avail.

Check the screens:

In the preferences/sounds menu:

The only “device” available is the Conexant ID 2c06 (OSS Mixer); However, I have the option for several “audio conference – audio capture” options:

- ALC833 Analog (it appears twice, I don't know why);
1.- ALSA – Advanced Linux Sound Structure;
2.- OSS – Open Sound Structure (apparently, this should be the one compatibçe with the OSS mixer, right?)
3.- Sound Test
4.- Silence
5.
6.Picking any of these apparently has no effect whatsoever; just the inner audacity options seem to matter.

8.The audacity menu (edit-preferences-devices-recording)...

11.
12.... also gives me many options:
13.
14.- OSS:/dev/dsp (works, but gives me the result I'm presenting here);
- ALSA:HDA ATI SB: ALC833 Analog (hw: 0,0)
- ALSA:HDA ATI SB: ALC833 Analog (hw: 0,2)
- ALSA: front
- ALSA: surround40
- ALSA: surround51
- ALSA: surround71

Any pick of device except the OSS will bring up an error screen “erro acessing the sound device; please check the configurations of the device and the project's sample ratio”.

This keeps with any combination I tried between the config of the two menus shown above... and I think I tried them all.

Finally, I messed a bit with the “volume control”:

and apparently, only the first and last slide bars - “volume” and “in-gain” - had any effects whatsoever as to me being able to alter the output – though nothing even remotely adressing the existence of that weird noise.

So, basically, Im asking for some advice here; what can I try in order to make this thing work as expected?

Regards :).

try a different player or see if there is an update for the one you have.

I recommend vlc media player it plays about everything there is video and audio. It's not the best audio player, but it should do.

type "sudo apt-get install vlc" without quotes if you're interested

if you still experience problems with another program then you probably have an odd audio driver problem.
