Auto Saves piling up

When I go to load a game now, I am confronted with a long list of games I've saved, but also by a long list of auto saved games and God knows what else.

I understand the computer saves the game to the file every 4th turn.

But now when I look at the list, I have no idea what is what.

How do you all manage this auto save thing clogging up the file?

And are there things that are in "load game" that come with the game that I haven't put in there? It looks like there are and I am afraid to even think about deleting them.

And how do you know what to delete when you open the folder in my computer and see all those little files?

The first thing I did was to always play the same leader name (Duke of Marlbrough) that way you don't get tons of autosave files, only 2.

Then I started playing a couple games at once (yes, I was spending my life paying this game at one point) so I started to make folders for each game and keep the save organized that way. Once I finished the game, I deleted the folder. I also started to name the folders with the date i started the game so I would know if a game was too old to delete it.

I beleive the default directory for the saved games is just in the main Civ folder. It also has all the game files and such there. At least create a folder called games or saves or something. Don't delete anything that does not end in .sav

Stwils,

The files on our Computer got so numerous that it finally said

" This Folder has too many items and not all of them will be shown "

After this we started adding a number to the name of the leader of our CIV.

Before we make the first move of a new game we save the game and
when the save game screen comes up we create a new folder and
label it with the name of the leaders name in that game.

We keep each game Folder inside a series of folders so
that we have some idea of which game is which.

So it looks something like this:

Main Folder " Civilization Games " inside this
a separate folder for each level " Chieftain " thru " Deity "
inside " Deity " are " Abe 1 " , " Abe 2 " . " Abe 3 " and so on.

To sort through all our old games mess as we suspect you have now,
we clicked on arrange by Date,( that helped us anyway), much easier
than zooming up and down the list alphabetcally.

We put our " Games folder " inside the main " Civilization files " folder
that your saves usually showup in.

Delete often. I have more saved games then I care to imagine on my HD, and this is after I did a massive house cleaning a month or two ago

You always think that you'll "Go back and finish it later", but the odds are, you won't

1. don't use autosave... There ya go, problem fixed!!! Just save it your self at any points that you deem importatnt. Ie 2000bc, 1 AD, 1000Ad and 1500ad... If you need to be as specific as to going back to a time when some thing stuffs up your current game... and the last time you manually saved it doesn't help then you start agin!!!
Otherwise you stick at is and do the best you can...
Did Napoleon get to go back to his last battle and get another go?? Did Hitler get to go back and try annihilate another few million jews... Nope again!
Should just save the game like every half hour of playing or so... unless your computer regularly crashes, then you haqve to save it more often!!

Thanks all. But please help me out with how to create a games folder. All I know are the folders that are open in "Load Game." Where do I go to create a new one and how do I get it in the "Load Game" option?

And the only way I know how to delete a game is to open my computer/mps/civ2/ and then drag and drop those little thingies (with the folded down edge) to the trash.

There must be another way.

The manual is no help here.

Depending on which version of Windows you have (assuming you are on a PC

), you go into 'my computer', then your hard drive, usually letter 'c:', go into the folders you installed the game in. Once there go up to the menu and click on the 'File' menu, the click on 'new', then click on 'folder'. name it and that should be it.

Another way might be to click on the little 'folder icon with a star on it' up along the top when you are saving your game. This is the same as create new folder. Name it, hit enter, then double click on it to enter it. Then you can save your game in there.

Hopefully I remembered enough of the details to allow you to follow this....

Thank you, Duke. I did as you suggested and went to My computer/c/mps/civ2 and created a new folder from the options I think under File.

And I have practiced and was able to get one game I was playing (albeit a few minutes!) to go into the new folder through Save Games.

And I was able to get it out with Load Games.

But what about deleting files? Can that be done from inside the game, or do I have to go to My Computer/c/mps/civ2/ and drag to the trash all those little auto save files that look like a page with the corner turned down?

I have two computers. Windows 98 on one, and Windows ME on the other. You'd think by now I would know how to do this stuff...

Thanks for helping me.

OK, Duke, I will go to My Computer and delete that way.

Thanks so much for getting me on the right track.

Now I can save in folders - and delete all this gross accumulation of auto saved games I don't want.

Thank you again,
