Availabiltiy of resources

Playing on a pangea, I am currently in a pickle. There is NO COAL!
There is no caol in my area.

I have traded world maps and can see no coal in the AI areas either.

I have sent units into the AI areas (at some cost) and nothing.

I have investigated their capitols to see if they have it in their resource box...nada...

Is it possible that no coal exists in this game?

Look around for other islands. Sometimes it is easy to miss a small island on the other side of the map.

OK, now I feel really blind.

I downloaded a mod to make resources easier to see. Lo and behold, there is coal!

And to think I have been going without the coal for a while because I didn't see it.

I've had the same problem with the coal - mainly my first game of Civ3. I think there's a game save if you can find it... I scowered both continents before switching to a mod, and where was it? About 15 tiles away from my capital!

And yes, I've seen no-oil maps. Makes war a bit more interesting.

here's one without oil

That's not surprising after looking at the map. There is no desert, and only 5 tundra tiles. (the only places oil can show up). 3 of those tundra tiles have cities on them, so it's possible there was forest there before the cities were put there. That leaves only 2 tiles that oil could possibly have been placed at the beginning of the game.

Well actually, I was looking forward to some good no-oil headbashing , but a few turns later I won (first game I ver finished tbw), when I triggered a conquest victorie

Now, I always leave at least ONE worker on automatic. He's better at spotting resources than me.

the offshore platform, the game should put some OIL in the oceans. Then, you could be allowed to build an oil 'colony' in the middle of the ocean.

Oil should also appear near any river delta.

Last game I played I couldn't get oil for the life of me. It's just too important of a late game resource to not have any way to get it. Great Britain and Norway aren't producing oil in their deserts or tundra.
