Purchased Colonzation from Direct2Drive just now and my download has started. Checked Gamersgate and Steam but its not available on either yet.

(Wait another 20 min before you purchase it so you don't screw with my bandwidth :P )

I don't resort to D2D because the games you get from them need specialized patches, which usually come out a day or two after the official, normal ones are released. But that's just me. :p

I made the purchase on gamersgate this morning only to find out several hours later that they stuck up a notice that it will be available on the 26th so I emailed them for either a refund or a inshop credit. Im going to get it from best buy since I have to drive down there later tonight anyway.

If GG doesn't want to give a refund (since I havn't downloaded it I don't know why they wouldn't) or a credit, then it's the last $29.99 they will get from me and I've bought quite a few games from them in the past year or so. I don't forsee a problem although their faq's say nothing about refunds or credits. Had they had it up for release today, I wouldn't have bothered to go to the store when Im in town tonight.

I no longer buy from D2D as the last game I bought from them was a chess game that clearly advertised that it had multiplayer, only UBI had shut down the online servers years ago, and when I contacted D2D, they basically told me it's not their problem and that I would need to contact UBI and I told them "NO, you have to fix your false advertising, there is clearly no way to play this online anymore!". After bantering back and forth for 4 or 5 days they finally relented and issued a credit, to which I took it, and told them to flake off and have never bought from them again.

Never had a problem with any of the handful of games I've bought thru D2D.

Finished my D2D install and am playing the game now! Woot!

In response, I don't usually mind waiting a day or two to install a patch. In fact, it usually works better for me since I'm busy finishing up the game I'm currently playing. Direct2Drive is a solid solution and they have the game now if you want to play it today. If you want to wait til the 26th to ensure your patches arrive on the day Firaxis releases them, be my guest.

Back to playing!

Rang around stores today during work trying to find it, even resorted to going to 2 stores to look myself. Drove home dejected and hating the world then...... I looked at Steam :goodjob: 18minutes away from download finishing.

I never bought a game through a download site. Does it download a file? Can you burn the file and use it to reinstall the game 5 years from now? ...

Steam allows you to redownload as often as you want. They allow backing up, but you still need to use the Steam client to do the install (basically a very simple DRM solution).

So what happens if Steam goes out of business?

I have a longer term view for the possessions that I purchase. Seeing as anything on the internet is so volatile, I don't feel I can trust game companies to survive forever. But then even games with physical support are starting to require constant server authentication online. Not sure I'm enjoying that.

I don't think Valve will be going out of business anytime soon. Halflife 2 did very well and they are going to release Halflife 2 episode 3 soon. They also have lots of people playing and supporting Counterstrike. Steam should be here for a long time.
