What is it? A board game? I would love to have a board game version of Civilization!

Remember, the CIV pc/mac game was loosely based (more or less inspired) by this board game. It is so different there are only a few parts that resemble it - and the game did not go to the modern era - it went from 4000BC to 250BC - it had a map of the Mediteranean area and the fertile crescent and the winner was declared by the first civ that met all the requirements to advance out of the ancient era. The games were long - usually taking a whole day, and you had to have a minimum of 3 players and a max of 7. Rules inherent to the game made it impossible to have a large empire - it was more of a city-state type set-up and you could control maybe 1/4 of the entire map at best (less starting players used less of the map).

I do have the Avalon hill boardgame. I do also have the Advanced civilization expansion and a dutch version from a company named compendium.
What Magnus forgot to tell is that it is a great game to play. For gameplay it is best to have the maximum number of players (that is NINE with advanced expansion and the western expansion map).
I do play the game three or four times a year. We usually start about 11:00 in the morning. We once finished a game before 20:00. That is the main advantage of experienced players. Experienced players do play faster. It might also help to agree on a maximum amount of time used for trading the commodity cards. If every turn for trading takes about 30 minutes or even longer, then it is going to be a very long and possibly boring day. Cut the maximum time to 5 or 10 minutes per trading session, and you might be able to play three or even more turns per hour.
For those players looking for the game: go to gaming conventions or to specialized board game stores. I do not know how it is in other countries, but every major city here in the Netherlands does have a shop concentrating on board games I like to play.

Well, Magnus that is a computer game. It could have been nice, if it wasn;t so buggy. It is far more fun to play against human opponents, on a tabletop game board...

I have a copy; but I can't run it on my machine. I have been trying to run it using DosBox... can't get it right either.

I found 3 days ago a brand new box of the game I was extremely lucky as I've been searching for it some time. 70 euros and it was unused, all tokens in its original place etc. I told the shop owner if I could see the content as it was second hand (supposedly) and I almost cried ( yeah a bit exaggerating, but i really searched for this game for some time pretty happy with it) when it was unused.
Personal history aside the game is great I had player the PC version "Advanced Civilization" which is pretty much the same if you want to try the game it could be downloaded fairly easy, it is a bit old though.
Even Sid M. said he was inspired to create tech trees form this game and even a co-designer played it regularly.
Pretty enjoyable the PC version and the board one, not focused in war instead trade is mandatory if you want to get the victory.
If you're in with board games as i'm nowadays is pretty awesome.

I've played it about 3 or 4 times. Unfortunately, one of the people I play with is really good at it (must be something to do with the way he trades), so I haven't won at all. It's a hard game.
