Why resize it ?
I always cut a square-shape out a picture and then just upload it here as an avatar. It's automaticaly resized.

(i use IrfanView btw, but i don't do the fancy stuff the ppl here do)

@Chuski: thanks, it looks better but it's still not quite transparent and it has a white border on one side. Can you fix that please?
