So I am in a G&K game and feel compelled to share a special moment in the game.
The difficulty is deity and the map is large Pangaea.
The beginning of the game was very rough due to an aggressive neighbor, Hiawatha. He DOW'ed me very quickly and after much fighting using archers and warriors, I was able to force him to surrender and give up the city, Grand River.
A city with 8 population being handed to you is NOT as nice as it may seem! Getting back to positive happiness was difficult. I would have conquered the city instead, had I thought about the consequences.
Anyways, some time passes and I send a horseman out to help my scout explore. I happen to stumble upon Hiawatha again. Only this time he's ripping Suleiman apart. Poor Suleiman.
Naturally, I decided that this was the perfect time to attack him again because the majority of his force was out of position . I wanted his capital, but there was one small problem. His capital is practically impenetrable!
With only 3 tiles to attack the city with melee units, and archers being unable to fire from any position due to the trees, I didn't think there would be a way to break it down. This is also the Iroquois we are talking about. They are in their dominant time period with their unique unit and to top it off they have double movement through all of those forests! Owch.
But then, I had a great idea. I had never used the Great General's special ability before, but I saw a potential use for it here.
So, I made sure my other immediate neighbor was cool with me DOW'ing Hiawatha.
And then I set up a citadel RIGHT on top of the city using my great general. The citadel provides a 100% defensive bonus to any unit standing inside of it, and any enemy units within one tile of it takes 30 damage. Much to my surprise, the damage also occurs to units INSIDE the city as well. My position was absolutely unbreakable.
It even cleared the forest on that tile, so my archers could hit the city from multiple positions now. Also, it stole 2 fur tiles for me! The city eventually fell, but I don't have a screenshot or a save near that time unfortunately.
I just thought I would share this, because I felt quite clever turning a seemingly impossible situation into an easy one by using a mechanic that I had never used before.
