Ok I played this game as a random civ (got Tokugawa) on Prince, Standard Size, Fractal (turned out to be Pangaea). IStrap yourself in cuz this is quite a story!!

I have gold in my BFC and I say wow!! Then, i find my nearest neighbour's capital ~10 tiles from mine and its Shaka :( Good things never come in bunches + I soon discover he has copper in his BFC - double dang!! I gotta take this guy down before he comes to me...

There is no other copper nearby but I research animal husbandry since I have pigs in my BFC too - I discover horses a bit to the west and settle my second city there; I wasn't sure whether to go for iron working now (iron may not show up) or get horseback riding and do a horse archer rush for the first time - I do realize that Shaka's impis can eat my horsies apart but I decide to go ahead and try it. I get HBR and start mass producing (with chopping) a bunch of horse archers - seeing 1 archer in Shaka's capital a mere 10 turns earlier, I decide to attack with 6 HA's and a chariot I built before.

When I approach his capital (after DOW), I see 4 impis, 2 archers and 1 axeman in his capital !?! I move on to another city after pillaging Shaka's copper and his other resources; the city defended by an archer and an axeman and I capture it but lose 2 horse archers, giving others shock promotions so they can fight an impi counterattack - the impis manage to kill one horse archers but the others survive. Now, I make peace with Shaka and research iron working, building up a bunch of swords for the next strike as well and also some archers for defense. Islam spreads to me from Saladin and I convert to it. The other civs at this point are much behind me (at least 3 techs) but have larger empires (Zara and Lincoln have 9 cities to my 5!!!)

I build up another force and I invade Shaka - I easily capture 2 of his cities bu t lose the one I captured in the first war. That gets me really mad so I get contruction and chop 4 cats and go after his capital which has 8 defenders - a mix of archers, impis, and axemen (I have 8 swords and 4 cats) - his capital falls and I make peace. He gives me some gold and that city back. Now, I've got 9 cities (its 1000AD) but I'm 2-3 techs behind Zara, Lincoln, and Victoria and about level with others (Shaka is way behind) and Shaka is still not done :(. I'm researching at 50% at a deficit so I gotta do something about my economy fast, build up a bunch of samurai and cats and go take care of Shaka once and for all. This should give a large enough land and population so I can stay competitive with other civs. Lincoln and Zara are the 2 largest civs and they have 11 cities so they are not way ahead by any means.

I think I can recover but I need to be smart. I think I should revolt to slavery and whip courthouses in all of my cities (only 2 or 3 have them) and then work on improving my income - only my capital and one other city have been cottaged. Then, I gotta build up some military and go finish Shaka off and maybe Huayna too .. he's right south of Shaka who's south of me and hates me also. I figure I should also get some advice from the experts here who know much more than me.

Turtle up and fix your economy. Leave what's left of shaka for now. He has been nuetralised for the most part and provides a weak buffer between you and inca boy. Protective crossbows and longbows behind walls with a few cats and horse archers in your border cities should keep you safe. if you are teching to samaurii, I would skip civil service and go to guilds then gunpowder. Once you have knights and muskets the game belongs to toko. Tech civil service while you build your army of cg1 drill1 combat1 plus one other promo muskets. When toko gets gunpowder, nothing stands in his way.

I'd make Rifling a priority, Toku's Rifles are scary. I agree with CivCorpse on leaving Shaka alone for now, he's pretty much been knocked out of the game.

You're right .. maybe I should leave him for a while but then again I definitely need more land to be able to research faster than those other civs especially considering that I'm Toku. BTW I forgot to mention that I built the Statue of Zeus in Kyoto cuz I figured I'd be going to war a lot and I wanted enemies to suffer war weariness (at least Great Artists can help in culture wars too).

So whipping/chopping courthouses is the entire plan for now .. ? maybe I'll spread Islam around more to get more happiness benefits and switch to Organized Religion. Currently, Saladin, Shaka, and Lincoln also have Islam as a state religion.

Yes you need more land. But not at the moment. You need cash. Money. Dinero. Fix your economy. Being Toko doesn't make you tech slower. He only techs slower as an AI because he doesn't join the AI tech trading love festival. Build more cottages or run more specialists. Why are you in caste system and running no specialists? need some quick cash? run a couple merchants so you can raise the research slider. You basically have no source or research beyond a gold mine. You are not working the cottages in your capital and are not running specialists in any cities. Where does this research come from? trade routes?

Ya my cottages are not worked since the city can't grow anymore due to the happiness cap and I just switched to caste systems (when the war with Shaka was completed). Toku is aggressive and protective which doesn't help research in any way so I need to have a larger empire than most other civs in order to research faster than them in the long term assuming their city management is at the same level.

Haha .. I lost the game .. fixed my economy and crammed as many scientist specialists as I could into all the cities and did some cottage spamming but still could not catch up; turns out the AI's were more ahead then I thought - they all went from being 2-3 techs behind to 5 techs ahead in like 20 turns; even with courthouses in every city, I could still manage 50% research max (was losing money); I just don't like a leader that has no economic traits (financial, philosophical or even industrious or expansive). Even when I tried to wipe Shaka out with Samurai (I had a big number of cats, samurai and still some swords that I couldn't upgrade, the war was dragging on for way too long and I was falling behind even more - Shaka had quite a few horse archers which were winning some unbelievable battles against my samurai). Thus, I quit this game but I might go back to it (I have the 4000BC save) and try again. Tough start with no copper nearby and Shaka with copper in his BFC as a close neighbor. Except wines and spices, no other happiness resources nearby. Here's the 4000BC save for anyone who might wanna give it a shot..
