What's the best strategy for destroying/removing stupidly placed cities? I've tried building settler/engineer units to use up the populace but when I get down to one citizen the game just makes me wait longer for unit formation. I find I'm stuck with some pretty badly placed enemy cities after conquering. As I'm one of those type A personalities, this REALLY bugs me. Help!

If you have a city with size 1 and builds a setteler you can dissbane it. Atlest is so in CIV2 MGE.

On the easiest level, the game will not let you disband a city in favor of a settler/engineer, so you either keep the city, or play on a harder level, or leave it to the barbarians...

If you don't have valuable techs that your enemy could utilize, simply vacate the city, let the enemy take it back, this will bring city size down 1. Take city back, bring city down another notch. Repeat until city has been destroyed...........

Or when you give it back to the enemy use your spies to poison the water supply and bring the population down to one (or two if there are enemy units in the city) then retake the city. If you want to get rid of it using the build settlers method make sure you switch all your citizens to specialists or have them mine industrial areas. Also, make sure that you sell away the granary.

Well actually the best way is not always to give the city away to your ennemies as that lets them aquire a free technology!
The best way in my view is to cause starvation in the city by replacing the citizens by entertainers.
When the city has become size 1 you can build or rush build a settler unit and disband it. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>

Or you can starve and build a settlers in the same turn then population will decrease by two in one turn. and then dispand settlers and buy settlers. this way population decreases pretty fast.

What is the point in disbanding a bad city? if it is bad, simply put everything on water, and you will still have lots of trade from the city. then also put the city on capitalization, and you dont have to bother about the city ever again. make sure the city does not grow by creating an output of 0 food.

I wouldn't normally disband a city I've captured just because it is badly placed. There are usually better or more fun things to do. The only reason I would deliberately disband a captured city would be if I had no long term hope/need to keep it from recapture. Assuming I am ahead in tech then I wouldn't want to give away my science through such a recapture unless it was a deliberate gift. So if it was unproductive, vulnerable, unmaintainable and strategically unimportant then bring in the bulldozers! (But I have to say I'll go many games without doing this once.)

I have to admit, I am a notorious city-mover - I've even been known to move some of my own cities if exploration uncovers some resources that could make it worthwhile.

I do try to follow some of my own guidelines, however.
- I usually won't disband a city if it's over a size 4 or 5.
- I definitely won't disband one if it's very early in the game (such as an EARLY advanced tribe)
- Never one with a wonder (duh!)
- If I bribe a city with several units in it, disbanding the city would remove the units as well. In this case, I will either keep the city or move the units to another city to get support there before disbanding.

Other than that, I DO tend to look long-term with my cities and if it means making use of a whale and a fish square or just keeping it from overlapping a nearby city I think it's worth it.

I hope that in Civ III that there will be a "raze city" option or something to that effect.

A bad city can be given to barbarians without fear. So they'll produce units that you'll buy later... As these units don't come from your cities, they needn't support. It's useful when you're in Democracy or Republic. Nevertheless, be careful to buy them far from your nearest town. Otherwise they'll be attached to it.

Hey Maria!

Don't disband your cities. Cities are the basic support for your civilization!!!

Hope you enjoy playing civII.
