Balanced Maps

Hi there civ community!

So over the Christmas I've been advocating for a couple of friends of mine to buy a copy of civ so we could play some multiplayer. And lo! what a success it was, we are now playing games with up to 6 people in surprisingly stable games, however we do have one problem.

We tend to divide us self into fairly even teams, the good players playing with the, well no so good, to give them advice and teach them a trick or two while playing the game. However we have yet to find a map that will generate any sense of balanced starts, and so we were wondering what you guys thought of as the most balanced map types/settings?

We have tried the East vs West maptype, but one side (think it was east) had half their area filled up with mountains/dessert/ocean and as such could never expand enough to catch up to the other side and game was over practically from the moment the map was generated. We have also played Small Continents, Pangaea, Inland Sea, Ring and Continents. While most games don't end up overly favoring one side over the other (only about 1 in 4-5 games) it still feels like a waste of time when such maps are rolled, and it is based 100% on mechanics we can do nothing about.

We have also tried playing with different resource settings on, Strategic Balanced, which ended up spawning several people (one time an entire team of 3) without any horses nor iron within 8 tiles of their starting location, nor does it balance out number of said resources when they do show up or balanced out starting resources (non-strategic). Normal settings and Legendary Starts even didn't yield any better results (not that we expected it to but hey we had to try), the Legendary Start did however once yield an hilarious start for a Huns player, they got 2 tiles of horses, 6 sheeps and 3 cows, the sheer production and growth from that was rather funny :)

While it is very friendly games only, we do tend to mock each other for various losses for days to come, it is simply who we are, no one is getting overly hurt by it, not so much that they don't want to get revenge the next game at least. And well it is kinda annoying to have games decided from the get go based on some random map script.

TLDR:

Is there any settings which will guarantee, or at least limit the imbalance, balanced starts?

Which maps and settings do you consider to be the most fair?

Try skirmish. I recommend you set the dominant terrain to plains, but any setting there that doesn't involve water will work.

This is typically the map type that's used in competitive league play and it's fairly balanced for teams.

Edited to note that strategic balance on this map type will result in a source of 6 iron and a source of 4 horses within two tiles of your settler's starting location every time.
