It would be cool if barbarian camps evolved a bit along with their units, instead of always being a pre-historic campfire. And thus, they would no longer be barbarians forever, but something like this:

Ancient & Classical eras: barbarians

Medieval & Renaiscence eras: mercenaries

Industrial & Modern eras: luddites

Atomic & Information eras: terrorists

Just my 2 cents :goodjob:

Was it just back in Civ IV that if you and the AI left a barb camp alone long enough it would evolve into a barb city - sort of the precursor to the Civ V city states? I can't remember but the city would take on the name of an agressive barbarian 'state' from history and claim land around it and so forth.

On topic - yeah, I'd love to see that feature back in Civ or something similar.

Yeah. It would be even cooler if in different eras try did different things. For instance:
Ancient/Classical- what they do now
Medieval/Renaissance- may pay gold for them to attack others
Industrial/Modern- would seek out lone "modern" units in groups to attack
Atomic/Information- would attack cities & if they enter a city tile it would destroy 3 random buildings
That's my 2 cents :D

I would be in favour of adding something to Barbarians as era pass. But I'm not sure Mercanaries would really work. In later eras though they should be Guerrillas. Guerrillas would gain the Submarine invisibility so that only adjacent units could reveal them. Possibly a Heal on pillage ability as well in the information age.

But what I'd really like to see is a Barbarian horde type feature.
Essentially whenever a camp is formed it has a countdown
Once the countdown reaches 0 it starts spawning units every turn.
The units would get City Attack +33% and head towards the nearest city and try to capture and then raze it.
After 5-10 turns the camp would return to normal.

In Civ4 there weren't any encampments, but barbs would sometimes found their own cities. I remember one particular terra game in which barbs had settled cities all over the new world. I started from the south and went to the north, conquering barb cities until I owned most of the new world. :D

But yes, I agree that some barb evolution would be interesting.

I thought the barb cities were perfect in civ4. Well, except for the not being able to build party riflemen, even if you worldbuildered them into them future era.

I haven't played civ5 so I'm not sure how barbs were handled, but I'm quite familiar with civ2-4. I love the basic civ4 way of dealing with barbarians, but I wish it was expanded. In RL nearby barbarians would either attack each other or unify for a common cause. Not so in any version of civilization. Not once have I seen barb cities throwing warriors at each other, but have seen clusters of barb cities established near one another. What I would like to see are barbarian infighting or better yet clusters of barb cities spontaneously unifying and emerging as an entirely new civ to compete with the player / AI's.
