pulled this off by luck. if your city is about to get swamped with a horde of barbarians you have no chance of defeating, just pull out all your troops and let them in!!
just make sure you spend your gold the turn before, and that you aren't building anything important in that city (well if you are, you should have ample defences there anyway). They'll get nothing from you, and you can move your troops right back in with minimal production losses!
