What is the deal with these "Barbarian Uprisings"? I am cruising along. building up my area, then the "Uprising" message comes. Next thing I know, there are 30+ mounted barbarians coming after my cities and units.

The agravating part is - they go right by other civs settlers, workers, and cities!! WTH???

It seems that I cannot build up my area fast enough to prevent these uprisings. Is there any strategy to deal with these events?

Thanks to a newbie, but old time CIV player.

All I can say is build lots of units to scout the unsettled area and destroy the camps as soon as they appear (the hordes appear in those camps when 2 civs have entered the middle age).

I had a good game where I sold the city the barbs were about to attack to the Iroquios. The next turn I recaptured it, and in a couple more turns destroyed the Iroquios.

Expand, expand, expand. And what Amask said :)

EDIT: the uprising occur when the second civs enters a new age. For example from ancient age to middle age... You can be prepared for that by having a couple of warriors roaming by the time. You also can try to win the game before the middle ages ;)
