Any clues as to whether it will be possible for Barbarians to build ICBMs?

I think I've read that barbs can get tech. (research/steal/both) but whether the Manhatten Project considers Barbarians as a 'civ' is questionable.

Would be very cool if they can imo :goodjob: :nuke:

By the time a barbarian is in possition to get a tech, he will probably have become a civ unto himself after capturing a certain amount of cities. At least this is my understanding, correct me if I am wrong. Otherwise we'd have barbs throwing nukes everywhere (which might not be unrealistic in this day and age of terrorism..) :p

well... its a possibility. It's that possibility which makes certian stupid governments to certain stupid things like invading certain stupid countries. The possibility (even without plausibility) is enough to make the international community change its beahviour: the same could be true in civ.

And who doesn't agree that terrorists are "barbaric"? ;)

Well, this would be interesting, but only if you see barbarians as modern day terrorists. Otherwise it has no sense that let's say some lost tribe in Amazonia would produce nuke when they can't make iron axes.

true. But I also assume that barbs can only build nukes if they take over a civ's city. A lost tribe in the amazonia would not be able to take over Sao Paolo, but barbs could be seen as a rebellious faction of some empire, take over a city, and use the nukes it found iin there. Whether they are terrorists or freedom fighters... well, we've had worse debates on this forum before! :D

Do you think it likely that they will still exist that late in the game?

Why not? if some civs are totally wiped out and no one has colonized their land there might well be some black space on the map for a little while. enough to generate barbs or wild animals. There are wild animals in this day and age too...

And what about thoughs annoying tireme barbs which would go around the world until the modern age because no one bothered to kill them in civ3?

I thought I read somewhere they won't be around later, like said above.. but I can't remember where that was.. if they have to spawn in areas where no one has LOS, then I doubt they would be.. but it certainly could have changed

either way, I think it'd be interesting, viewing barbarians in later eras more as "freedom fighters/terrorists"..

doh, good point.. I didn't think about that either

Well i noticed in civ 3 that unless you play with an agressive AI - many times things get left alone by the AI so if the barbs took a city and then stayed peaceful for awhile they could in theory survive until they had better lvls of tech - if of course the AI actually gives them the right to develop tech and treats them like a Civilization.
My question is - if the above is true can you trade with a barbarian city/civiliization? and if so what would the leader of said city/civ look like and what would their characteristics be and.......?

Interesting point elderotter. CAN a barb civ research? can we diplomatically communicate with them? I think not forthe latter, as the difference between barbs and AI civs is that you can reason with an AI, barbs just want blood! Otherwise your barb civ would just turn into another real AI civ. (which might actually be cool if he got his hands on enough cities...)

I think it would bve pretty cool if after civs start building nukes that there is a small chance of a barbarian (read: terrorist) acquiring a nuke and then they blackmail a civ "Give us $1,000 or we will nuke New York!!!" But to keep it fun they actually will honor their agreement if you pay them and they go away for now...

If I can give them :nuke:nukes:nuke:, I certainly will.

...Away from me of course!

I miss the partisans and guerillas that would spring up in Civ2. It was always an unpleasant (yet fun) surprise to suddenly have modern "barbarians" on my doorstep.
