do they ever advance past the stone age to become a larger nusance than a bunch of horsemen and warriors piddleing around a fire cooking sticks?

Advance? No... but the barbarians will sometimes have "MASSIVE UPRISINGS". During a massive uprising, I have seen TWENTY horsemen created from a single camp in one turn... A massive uprising makes up for the lack of tech. Barbarians have to be dealt with some day. Leaving them to their own devices is ultimately more expensive than crushing their camps whenever they appear.

I just defeated their uprisings(which were spread across the globe) with long bow men that i had running off the barbarians in spots I haven't had a chance to build a city. Massive? yes. Mighty? hardly...
