Not used by me at all. Can be used to slow down incoming and to increase defense. Units will have to lose their movement when entering them iirc. They give a bonus to defenders, but for the most part the AI will not be attacking strong units behind a barricade.
I built a few [Barricades=Maginot Line] on my border to the Germans. just wish I would've guarded the border with the Dutch/Luxembourg *sighs*. You'd be describing France in 1939...
The stopping movement property of the barricade can be detroyed by bombing. Take an example:
If the opponent has a barricade in his territory, when my cavalry(6/3/3) defeat the defending troop in it, usually my cavalry cannot move anymore. However, if I bomb the barricade with artillery at first and succeed once, the property of movement stopping is detroyed, though the defense bonus still holds. If I bomb the barricade with artillery and succeed twice, the barricade will disappear.
Yes, it's an improvement on a fortress. It ends the units movement. So, a 3 move cavalry can move into it if it has no defenders, but can't use the rest of his move. It's like rought terrain.
Barricades/forts can be useful if you are playing the peaceful game, use them for sure at choke points, and along any shorts borders you have with people likely to declare war. But don't make them at the expense of other worker projects! Only if you have some spare worker turns. Remember that they give a unit zone of control, so leave gaps in your line of forts and plant tough defenders there, they will weaken incoming enemies.
