.bat files

Since I've started downloading scenarios, I've seen a lot of .bat files. Now I'm curious, how does one create these files? I've several ideas which would require one to create in the way I want.
 
Two things.
1. You need to know DOS line commands
2. Enter the commands into any plain text editor and save the file with the .bat extension.
 
Question for WinXP users: do .bat files work correctly under XP? They don´t run under my Win2000, so I have to do the scenario setup for scns with multiple events etc. manually...
