Battering Ram How does it work?

Went next to a city I was attacking it had ancient walls. Attacked city the normal way and it wouldn't work. I then tried to put a legionair on it..still wouldn't work
Is there a trick to it?

It only has to be next to the city centre, you do not attack with it. Attack with melee or anti-cav unit. One ram is enough per city and effective for all mentioned units, attacking from whichever direction, they don't have to be on the same tile with the ram. When the ram is next to city centre, melee and and anti-cav units deal full damage to Ancient walls, as opposed to -85% damage reduction if there is no ram.
