While attacking a nice little Japanese town, I noticed that my battering ram just won't attack anything.
At first I considered beheading them from treason, but noticed that you haven't included that "feature" :)
Is this a known bug?

The AI needs a cup of coffe and a exorcism. It seems that Attila's ghost is currently in possession of it.
For no logical reason I find myself at war with civilizations not even close to me. (and no, they are not allies to the ones that are close to me).
And the civilizations that are close to me seem way to eager to start unnecessary wars for nothing.

If you solve these errors I may or may not send you cookies.

As far as I know now you need to use battering ram along melee units on the same tile for them to grant an effect to city attack.

Battering ram is a support unit -- all it does is provide a boost to "real" military units nearby. Most importantly, support units cannot attack or defend. So, if a support unit is sitting alone on a tile (i.e., not in an escort formation with a "real" military unit), and an enemy military unit (including a ranged or bombard unit) moves onto that tile, the support unit is instantly destroyed.
