I did experiment with Retina display when the game was first released. There is a minor improvement in graphics quality and fonts are noticeably sharper. However I noticed that the iPad does get warmer than normal when playing the game with Retina display off and it occurred to me that if Retina display on uses more processing power it might generate more heat. I didn't want to risk cooking my iPad so I left Retina display turned off after that.
If it helps I get 4 hours battery power on my 12.9" A10X iPad Pro playing continents on a small map with Retina display off.
