I have been a long standing Civilization fan, but am I alone on thinking that the combat in this game is quite bad. In many cases you have your machine gun guys runnin' around and he attacks a spear guy. While you are watching your full health Marines get slaughtered by the spear guy. I can't help but wish I could change that. Do any of you know of a mod that changes that?

I think there's one that triples all the hp values, preventing such large deviations, but I don't know where you can find it.

Do it yourself Sweeper. It would be a good modding exercise.
Hint: don't forget to adjust the rate of fire of bombard units at well.

Lol, this issue has been mentioned at least 5 times throughout the past week.

I don't mind it too much since it doesn't happen too often. IMO, it's very seldom a spearman can defeat a marine, but it could happen, giving the game a bit more of a twist, instead of you being guaranteed victory over stone age units. Especially since the AI is notoriously stubborn when it comes to upgrading their units.

To each his own, but I think such a mod would destroy all balance. A civ with a small technological advantage, for example a scientific civ which gets Feudalism early, could steamroller its opponents very easily. The civs with good ancient age UUs would be even more unstoppable in early wars.

My point exactly. Since most of the time the AI has more obsolete units than you, this will make the game too easy for the human player. One tank will be able to easily crush a capital city guarded by 12 musketman.

more obsolete? they usually have more advanced units than i. i think this sort of mod would hurt me a lot.

isnt it true that if a player has equal technology to the ai then the player is probably winning? if so then this mod does nothing but speed up the win that has already been sealed. but it penalizes the come-from-behind player.

i vote for leaving the game as-is.

people keep complaining about this, but it's no that bad. if u play the game wisely, i will win with ur tanks over a civ with only spearman, pikeman or rifleman. it seems some expect to roll in a single tank, the civ with spearman, pikeman or rifleman shiffers of fear and surrenders itself to that one tank . . .

i can get pissed when my battleship is losing to a ironclad. but if if i got 5 battleships and he's got a bunch of ironclads, i will win if i play the game wisely.

It really eats man if see ancient unit destroying your modern unit. But you get used to it if you just keep in mind that it just Civ. It isn't well made war game, if you want one get Steel Panthers.

But like I've said before, it would be ultimate uber fantastic to make difference between mounted/armored units and infantry units. I mean just simply to add stats like: 2 against armored/mounted 6 against infantry, you get it?

I my recent game I've just lost 5 Elite-Knights against 1 Normal Warrior(after my last Knight he had only 1 health remained but he was promoted up to Elite). It is very frustrating.

I think the fights are sometimes quiet unfair. For what do I invest a fortune in science, when my modern units can be destroyed with some arrows from archers?

I have had my Panzer Tanks taken out by Pikemen!! The pikemen weren't even defending in a city, they were on plains. Oh well, I can see Bingen point. It does balance the game out.

It certainly is good for game balance. And if your strategy gets ruined by losing your tank to a spear, then change your strat, not the RNG.

I've seen that if you've had a good row wins with good units, then odds are going to be against you. Strange that after every win your odds are slightly reduced, untill you can lose even tank vs. spear man fight. After lose or few your odds are shining again. Sacrificing few crappy units will keep RNG gods pleased

besides that: if one of my spearman wins an occaisonal fight with a knight, or defeates a few swordman in a row, i'm celebrating the very excistance of this spearman. i never hear people complain about that. . . . .

Isn't a spearmen defeating tanks just like real life? Didn't Rambo defeat the State Police/National Guard with just a knife? Didn't Major Braddock defeat the Korean Army bare handed? How many guys has Dirty Harry shot down? Heck, Arnold defeated the Predator with sticks and rocks. Sometimes CIV is just like the movies, which is sometimes better than reality, or else who would pay $12 to sit through 2 hours at the theatre. Some of those CIV spearmen are amazingly gifted.

@JackRules: You're wrong, all of civ units haven't got US army training ;) :p

I was sad the other day when 7 veteran roman archers lost to two regular spearman in a town on grasslands. It should have been enough but it wansn't.

When player's spearman kills AI tank, that spearman is celebrated as hero. When AI spearman kills player's tank, it'll result in whining about the RNG and a reload...
