Bede04C-The Griddle (C3C1.22Emperor)

not much going on...

1405 (1):
greeks give spice and esp for med & 3 gpt
iros give communism for med, incence & 5 gpt

1430 (6):
renew incence with deal greeks for 22gpt instead of 26

rest of turns was worker management and infra builds
carth/greeks rebuilt one roman/celt city each

notes:
cash rushed some temples, started mostly courts in corrupt towns.
research on combustion just started (slowed research to cashrush).
built/started forts on new front.
intended to join some workers, but found jobs for them.
EDIT: amsterdam finished hoover, started wall street

Got it. Peaceful easy does it.

And easy peaceful was it.

No wars or even rumours of war.

Finished the interlocking fortress/barricade line on the Iro/Inca front and built another at Amiens. Cleared a lot of jungle and watered some grass. Reassigned some citizens as cops because I hate red icons. :D

A blockade is needed in the north as the Native Ammuricans keep trying to slip settler pairs through. I noticed that Inca has no saltpeter, so trading him some when he has more money will slow him down a little, htough it is hardly needed.

Finished a building at Amsterdam and started another.

There is some pollution at Paris but it is not affecting output.

There is a pack of slaves at Entremont on Automate-This City-No Changes just because it is amusing to watch them beaver around. :D

Victory in 1768 if the creek don't rise, or the natives get restless.

speaking of strategic ressources, exept for iros everybody got oil (greeks 3).

suggest we build some ships for a blockade when we got the tech, i would hate to see some of amsterdams culture buildings destroyed through naval bombardment. same for air, some jets in amsterdam should be easely affordable when flight comes in.

no need to hurry science, there are only a few useful wonders in modern age, the new units would only tempt the AI to attack.

The only reason to hurry science is to build the UN. That is the only risk to our victory. I certainly wouldn't be buying or selling techs, or trading luxes to the other guys.

That brings up a question I've had for a long time. Has anyone ever seen a coastal fortress do anything? I can't recall ever seeing a ship get damaged from one. Well, there's always Civil Defense.

Got it.

Re: Coastal fortresses

As I stated in a thread in the strategy & tips section, I think coastal fortresses are a complete waste of time. They only attack a ship if it moves between two tiles that are both adjacent to the city. Since the AI is programmed not to do this, AI ships are never attacked by a coastal fortress.

They are also the first thing destroyed if a ship bombards the city. One person replied to this comment saying that at least this stops a marketplace or something else being destroyed, but that is only the case in vanilla/PTW. In C3C, the naval bombard order is:
- Coastal fortress
- Ships in port
- Units defending (until redlined)
- Population
- Improvements
In summary, I think coastal fortresses are not worth the shields to build them.

Some very uninspiring turns. I have discovered that 20K runs seem to be like that. The only highlight was my short battle with the pirates. :D

Techs: I discovered Motorized Transport in 1520(4) and proceeded to switch all cities building infantry and artillery to tanks. In 1540(8) I got Flight and set some cities to build airports. This sent us into the Modern Age, so I set research to Fission (for the UN) at maximum.

Amsterdam: It completed Battlefield Medicine in 1515(3) adding 1cpt. It also grew to size 21 on this turn and hired a tax collector. It is no longer growing. The city also built a commercial dock and an airport. The discovery of Flight rendered the Colossus obsolete. I have started the naval barrier around it using destroyers. The current build is an army as a pre-build for the UN.

The Map: In 1540(8) a destroyer revealed the final piece of the world map.

Trading: In 1510(2) our deal for Greek spices expired. Not wanting to plunge our citizens into unhappiness I decided to renegotiate.
Trade with Greece: Get spices for dyes + gems + 8gpt + 18g.

Piracy: In 1505(1) a couple of privateers appeared near Amiens and one of them had the cheek to sink our frigate. [pissed] BIG MISTAKE. I immediately set about improving our understrength navy and ordered up several destroyers. Next turn I sunk one of the pirate ships with a frigate before sending our wooden ships into retirement. In 1520(4) a privateer reappeared near Amiens, but this time I was ready. It stood no chance against my new destroyer fleet. I sunk another on the next turn and then none were seen again. I have no doubt that these evil sailors originated from Carthaginian ports.

The rest of my time was spent on workers and on setting city builds.

Notes:

Fission in 4 @90%, 2070g, -263gpt

Our gpt income has dropped as a 100+ gpt payment from Greece expired on the final turn. I suggest selling them Steel for as much as you can get. We need the gold to plough into our research.

I will repeat here that the Army build in Amsterdam is for the UN.

I built 13 destroyers and 12 tanks during my turns.

Should we rush an airport in Rotterdam and send some units there?

Roster:

M60 - up next
el filet - on deck
Bede
Zakharov - just played

Spend a little coin and check out what ALex is up to in his capitol before doing the deal for Steel. If his research rate is greater than 60% and if Steel is worth everything Alex has then I would do the deal. If his research rate is less than 50% and he witholds anything then don't. My thinking here is that we need to take enough out of his pocket to hurt his income so he has to drop research. And sell it on to everybody else if you do sell to Alex. Don't want him re-lining his pockets aftetr we have turned them inside out.

We will be out of pocket ~1100g for the UN without selling him anything and I would shut off research once we have a lock on the UN, so there is no harm to our treasury in the long run if we don't do any deals.

The save at 1600

Got a start, Alex had research @ 40%, but saw no reason to make any deal. He only had about 40-some gold in the bank. Amsterdam army pre-build switched to UN. Fission in, a leisurely pace to computers. Amsterdam can round out culture builds with SETI and a research lab for 5cpt more. A little under 50 turns to 20k.

Nothing else to report, started wealth in some cities. AI civs all over want to talk, but I wasn't in the mood to see anyone. On cruise control now, UN in 2, and Paris doing The Manhattan Chowder or something like that. ;)

A Carthaginian pirate vessel made a run at the three unescorted galleons I parked off his shore. Their captain saw a great opportunity to send our helpless seamen to Davy Jones' locker. What he didn't see was the Mark-48 torpedo from SSN Amsterdam. Hopefully everyone will have a chance to catch a fish or two before it's over.

It looks like it's over to you Bede. It's a shame to have a skip so close to the end.

Actually I think it goes to el_filet.

Roster check:

el filet - up
Bede - on deck
Zakharov
M60

I know that. I said over to you as it has been over 24 hours since M60 posted the save. If you don't mind giving el_filet more time then that's fine by me.

Right as always Z. Couldn't play tonight anyway, so e_f has until tomorrow in any case.

iros and greeks are close to MA

mainly changing city builds and cleaning pollution
merged some workers
got scientific leader :)

16681 culture, 120 cpt (28 turns)

notes for next player:
keep around some workers for pollution (up to 5 tiles/turn), merge the rest if they annoy you (some are fortified near amsterdam)
research plan: nuclear power->genetics
suggest you finish internet, use huygens to rush seti, then build nuclear plant and offshore platform (dispand some units and cashrush, most units in amsterdam were built for this purpose). until then genetics should be in to start these wonders. this won't help much toward 20k, but at least you got something to do

Check out this thread:

To test it, start the third intro conquest "locked alliances", and activate the king unit.

Just thought I should let you all see this in case you missed it. :)

Thanks, Zak. Elvis showed up in AdmK06 too.

Got it, playing tonight, I hope.
