As of this morning I haven't been able to open Civ V. I select the icon on desktop, get the window to pick the DirectX version, and when i click there nothing else happens. I've read a thread here but don't know if I can start it in windowed mode and I've gone to the Stream help and seen the suggestion there:

Go the folder in your steam index/common/civilization v
delete the Type. file “srcds_run” and then re-validate the integrity of game cache.

but I don't see the file nor can I find how to re-validate the integrity.

I can't find a civilizationv.exe file and I've seen some posts that the patch may have done something to it but without a media CD I don't know how to reinstall. The Stream website shows me with Civ V and ready to play but it just never starts.

I wrote to Stream Support earlier this morning but haven't gotten a response. I'm really annoyed that I'm dependent on an internet service to run a game that resides on my hard drive and they don't seem to have decent support.

Anyone having the same thing or have any ideas how to get back up and running?change

When you see the launcher come up, does the second option (for DX10/11) look like it's messed up, like text over top of other text?

It does, but it's been that way since I installed it and it worked until today.

You can reinstall from steam directly. Just kick the Civ5 files, and they should automatically be redownloaded.

The problem what Mr. Shirk mentioned is about if you have Win 7, then this problem is normally due to Steam being installed in Vista compatibility mode, but i have no idea why this should affect the ability to start in DX9 mode.

I'm sorry, I've been looking for a way to reinstall all day, can you define what you mean by kick the civ files?

So I moved that whole folder to the recycle bin and now when I try to start it I get Game is unavailable, please try again later

Any other ideas?

Looks like deleting the clientregistry.blob file might do the trick. It's trying to validate and download files now but it tells me the Stream server is too busy to handle my request. /sigh

Well I tried for 2 hours last night and for an hour this morning and all I ever get is that the Steam server is too busy to service my request. Still haven't heard from Steam support and this is pretty dang stupid. I don't understand why the publisher decided to force us through Steam. It's my first experience with them and it's obviously been horrible. Knowing I have to go through Steam will be an immense negative for any game I consider purchasing in the future.

I have the same issue. I see the screen where I can choose if I want to boot the game in DX9 or DX10/11, and then when I select one absolutely nothing happens. I checked to see if I could delete any files or anything, but the files mentioned are not there. Weird, it worked fine a few days ago...

I get no error message either, just nothing happens.

The same issue here.

When I try to run Civ V in Dx9 mode, I see a pop-up note saying, that the game is unaccessible and to try again later. When I select Dx10/11 mode, nothing happens. WTH??? It's really annoying

I've been trying for more than 8 hours now to get Steam to verify my files and I get too busy to service my request every time. I've disabled anti-virus and firewall but no help.

What a horrible horrible system they have.

Well I finally got a response from Stream support, it goes like this:

Hello J, Thank you for contacting Steam Support. Please exit Steam and go to the folder called C:\Program Files\Steam\ (this is the default location for a Steam installation - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it). Delete all of the files in this folder except: The \Steamapps\ folder and Steam.exe (this file is listed as an application and features the black and white Steam logo) Restart your computer. Then, launch Steam.exe from within the Steam installation folder, and not from a pre-existing shortcut. With Steam running, re-test the original issue. Note: This process will not affect your currently installed games. Additionally, please complete this process for your installed game(s): Title: Verifying Game Cache Files (GCF) Link: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335 Let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.

I tried to do everything they said to the letter but can't do exactly as they say since after deleting the files and restarting computer, Stream is already started, I shut down Steam and started it from where they say and I still get the same issue, when I start the game and it tries to verify the files I am told that the servers are too busy to respond to my request, for two days now it's busy????

In addition now I can't start the Stream Support Center, how handy, when I try to start it I'm told that it can't find the StreamInstall.msi file. I did an advanced search of all my hard drives for that file and it doesn't exist anymore.

At this point it's become completly absurd, I'm sorry to vent so much, but all I see is waiting another 36 hours for an email from Stream that doesn't fix my problem. I so wish I had bought the media hard copy, at least then I think I could reinstall and fix the problem but I'm not paying for it twice.

RESOLVED! Yay. I still haven't heard back from Stream support but realized that I should just try to completely uninstall Steam and Civ and see what happened. Uninstalled Steam and that seemed to uninstall Civ as well. Reinstalled Steam and Civ and everything works again. Didn't even lose my save games. Should have thought of that earlier.
