Beginner Tips on some Intricacies of the Game

Very helpful TY much .. I've got to read those 2 threads. I've been playing at city specialization over the weekend .. and it seems a natural once you get the idea. Obviously - starting at the very EARLIEST exploration picking out which spots will be what kind of city is going to take practice. I've always laid out my BFC dots to maximise land use, getting cities as close as possible whith minimal overlap, while trying to minimize deserts and mountains when they're in the mix. What I'm basically hearing is cherry pick the obvious dots for specialized cities during that first map evaluation, then fill in the gaps smartly ... giving each city a specialization and building exactly to that. The tactics for building gold cities is blowing me away, and a GP farm is even more over the top !!! WHats a Nice number for GPs ? How many GPs, how early how often, as it were ?

Also .. shouldn't I maximize food production to use every tile in my mixed cities ? I can think of plains cities with some zero food hills ... do I try to get the highest population total possible by farming everything in and windmilling the rest ? Or do I accept a lower than possible max population, and some unused squares.

Oh and finally one BIG gripe- is there any real way to que up workers tasks ? Civ 3 had the "irrigate to" button, for example. I seem to spend a TON of time moving around these little rats in their maze, and I almost always forget what I've priotized earlier, and redoing my tile counting and BFC checking to decide for the thrid time if a flood plain was going to be a cottage or a farm, etc.... Much less if I was trying to save a forest for a lumber mill or something like that. I really wish we could mark a tile for future improvement, rate it's priority for workers to get to, and then forget about it !! I have tried to automate workers, both globally and citywide, and they ALWAYS screw up what I would have built.

Thanks again guys I am truly having a blast :)

IS there anywhere a list of abbreviations in all these helpful thread links ?? I know they all make sense and I play the game a TON but .. theres a few I just confuse with old D&D abbrevations, or stuff ...
