Beginner's guide?

Hey there, I just played my first game of FFH2 last night, and so far I think it's an excellent mod. However, I am totally overwhelmed by the changes to vanilla Civ4, and the mass amounts of information being thrown at me in the game. I have read the FAQ and browsed the Wiki, and I'm starting to catch on a little. I am wondering though, is there a good beginner's guide anywhere that would walk me through all the basics? I feel like I'm missing so much information, and that all the information available is scattered around so it's hard to know where to start.

Hey Svenn, I'm relatively new here myself and had some of the same problems. I've actually enjoyed the process of discovering things as I go along, but I'd had some frustrating times as well (especially trying to figure out what some of the wonders do).

Many of the game mechanics are still in flux, so I doubt you'll see a guide until farther along in the development process. The Wiki and the forum search button are your best allies at this point.

As wig said you've done some good reading up already, but the best way is trial and errror, give all the civ's a go, be it on Normal and Fast to get a feel for the units and style of play, and then from there move maybe onto slower games to experience the major plays and movements of the game.

Epic is good for a "!quick!" FfH style game, and Marathon will have you slaving!

Thanks for the responses guys. I've been using the search button on the forums to look up anything I had questions on, and the FAQ/wiki helped a bunch. Hopefully I can start to learn some good strategies and get down the tech trees and stuff pretty quick. I'll more than likely be playing with several other people (probably both team vs AI and free for all), so it should be interesting learning it with other people.

More multiplayer testing is always good. The Wiki is the main source of info, as well as of course the civlopedia which is fairly good for features that have been in awhile. Otherwise just try to figure things out, and if something still doesn't make sense, feel free to post a question.

Here's Daniel's beginner's guide to FFH:

"Don't!"

Think of all the GOOD you could do with the countless YEARS of your life you will spend playing this most addictive of mods. Just... don't do it.

On a more serious note, a tutorial would be rocking.

Well, from my experience a good starting race is the Elves...just because with the amount of forests on a map and being able to build within them, and their scouts you can really control the world, have high research and good production without loss elsewhere.

This is the best page I'm aware of on the wiki for the true beginner. There are some detailed strategy sections under some of the civilizations.

Has there been any thought given to having information in the Wiki available in downloadable form for those of us that have poor internet connections?

I depend on the Civlopedia as I play FFH2 off-line. It is good, but I'm sure the Wiki has much more info.

Thanks.

Maybe it should be includeded into the civilopedia :) but well, another load of work.

I don't suppose the wiki is/can be hosted somewhere that is set up to allow someone to download an offline version?

Some of us have no broadband, or connectivity at only some of their computing locations, so a browseable offline wiki would be quite useful even though soon outdated. Ideally, of course, there would be a system for synching so as to download a 'change' file.
This capacity does exist in the public domain, right? :)

Might i suggest you use the editor to place units and buildings, give promotions, etc. then test them out to see what they can do, what they offer. It's helped me far more than the wiki.
While the wiki has some useful information, i finding it missing virtually everything i try to look for, and i find much of it to be outdated already, missing, or just wrong/misleading.
People seem to be having too much fun playing the game to update it. But its not like you can blame them.

Agreed. One of the best things about the mod is learning as you play.

However, there are times when it would be nice to just check something out quickly - like I would normally do with the civlopedia. When I have a decent connection (rarely) I like to read the Wiki, but not while I am playing the game.

Yes, doing the documentation I'm sure is a boring tiresome task, and I appreciate the work everyone has done on the mod itself.

Downloadable or not, the strength of the Wiki is the collaboration.
There's a great deal of info posted here in the forum that isn't (yet) mirrored in the Wiki.
I'm going to try to add-in things that I notice are missing or outdated, and I'm sure others will. We'll wind up with a great set of documentation this way, just use your least favorite official manual as motivation for how Not to do it. :)

hehe. Don`t fear, when we are in the last phase of Ice, we will create an official Tutorial :D

until then i suggest everyone helping out the wiki ;)

Please, if you notice something wrong/misleading in the wiki, and you know the correct answer, try to correct it.

The wiki should look in much better shape in a couple weeks (barring another significant release).

Maybe with a 3d head of Kael instead of Sid :D

Ooooh love it :>

This looks like the place to ask this question. Although I have been playing the game for about 9 months now there are screen shots showing things that I have no idea how to do. Can anyone tell me how to bring up the Event Log/Chat Log/Combat Log screen? Also I have no idea how to show the python Exceptions that are frequently attached that show errors in the game.
