Being Attacked Whilst Having Open Borders

I recently played a game where I was trying to spread Runes of Kilmorph accross the world.

I had open borders with one particular civ who had hill giants (or larry and curlys) stomping around inside their borders, but carrying the barb flag. Each time I offloaded a missionary from a boat into a city, one of the hill giants would come along and stomp me, even though I'm in a city with 5 or 6 freindly defenders.


Is there any way to stop this? I lost countless missionaries trying to spread RoK before I gave up in the end.

Nope, The Stooges belong to them, so will not attack their units, but rather skip straight to yours. Have to kill them, or land far away and take the overland trek to get around the oafs.

yeah, the larry/curly/moe units are special, hidden nationality units gained from the 'pact of the nilhorn' wonder. Although it says 'barbarian' they are in fact owned by the civ you speak of and will not hesitate to knock you down. transfer over some strong fighters and take care of them before they become a threat to you. The AI isn't smart enough to stop you killing its hidden nationality units.
