Vote Now Best Civ for Early Defense SORRY WRONG POLL NAME!!!!!!!!!

Aztec easily in my opinion. Nothing beats aztec archers in the early game. They are the only thing that can stop a mongol keshik rush.

Oh, i voted arabs before i read the poll correction.
Best early defence i would say greeks because they start with democracy and pikemen.

Best early defence has to be Aztec or English. English really because it's not impossible to beat a normal archer. English is better than Greece because Longbow Archers are cheaper than Pikes at same stats.

I think English has best defense early in the game. Not only are the longbow archers great on defense, but monarchy will push your borders out a little bit further, which means more traveling time for your enemies. Also, the fact that you can declare war (whereas the Greeks can't if they are still in democracy, which they start with) is good for defense. No better way to protect your lands than to fight inside your enemies.

Aztecs. By the time they have anything in your territory that can take out an archer, you've got an archer army, and they can send wave after wave at you with your auto-heal ability. No contest.

Sorry bout the Poll correction!

Well, Monarchy doubles the palaces cultural output, which will expand your borders (if just a little bit) earlier on. They can't go through your borders without declaring war, so if your borders are big, then it will take them longer to get to your city. I guess I shouldn't say it takes them longer to travel to you, it just gives you more time to prepare for them.

With low culture, they can declare war on you, and be next to your city a lot sooner. If you have better culture, and therefore bigger borders, it will take them longer to get to you (starting from the turn they declare war).

Monarchy won't give a huge bonus to culture, but it will help to push out your borders a bit. Still, having 1 or 2 extra turns to prepare can be the difference between losing/keeping a city.

It's much more noticeable with the French, because they start with a cathedral. Their borders expand quite a bit right from the beginning, which is good for controlling land, and defense.

Talking pure early game defense I would say the English
1. +1 archer defense = 9 archer army base.
2. Your getting a pikeman for the cost of a archer. You figure an archer army for every 2 pikeman.
3. Monarchy will expand borders. From what I noticed when borders expand you have to leave the borders to heal because your units cant destroy the culture on that tile.

2nd Greeks
having pikeman early game speaks for itself.

3rd Aztecs
Heal after victory means one army can wipe out waves of offense armies. I think base archer armies arent tough to break. Arabs are proof catapults are an early game unit.

Gotcha. I wasn't sure if the AI suffered a movement penalty when moving through your borders or not since I don't really pay attention to how many spaces the AI can move.

I think this is sort of redundant. English and Greece have 3 defense, but English only costs 10 rather than 15 for Pikemen. Aztec are also good, since they heal after battle.

healing after battle is only good if they actually win the battle so i personally think the nod goes to english and greeks over them

im going through the game by difficulty level and civ to get all my little tokens colored in and i know that on warlord and below that english and greeks are the only things that will give a warrior army fits in the early parts of the game every other civ is very beatable with a warrior army in the early parts including the aztecs
