Hi,

I was wondering which CIV is currently ranked #1 in science.

I have 3 obvious candidates:

1. Maya - fast +2 tech from shrines (goes to 4 with tall\tradition, quite nice)
2. Korea - + 2 from each specialist (HUGE, but midgame), 2+ tech from GP improvements (useful, but not THAT easy to get), science boost after constructing something related to science in capital (useful)
3. Babylon - GS after writing -> academy = great early science boost. After that + 50% to GS generation - not THAT useful IMHO. I was using them a lot in my early games - never managed to get too many GS...

What do you think?

I'd add Montezuma to the list because of the obscene growth you get with floating gardens.

Siam is also decent when you're lucky and get a lot of maritime and cultural CS allies.

Inca can be good for science too because they combine growth and production in a very unique way.

Also, Poland. Their ability to get an additional social policy tree for free is just godlike.

Siam is awesome for any victory type. ;)
You just need to keep your CS happy. Don't even need to ally them all.

I second this motion. Playing the Aztec can feel like riding a mechanical bull regarding happiness, but if you can stay on you get a high base score directly from population, and indirectly as quicker growth = more tiles used = more production = earlier libraries, universities, etc. They also have a strong culture bonus and SPs boost research.

I never bought the DLC with Korea and was pretty happy to see that they weren't auto-incorporated into the game with BNW as they are unjustifiably overpowered. Secularism is usually one of the biggest boosts in my research, and they have that from turn 1 automatically, it effectively works double when they get this SP, AND they have another research bonus on top of that? Ridiculous. May as well just play a civ that has infantry replace warriors.

Out of the three in the starting post I feel like Korea is a bit better than Babylon or Maya. Their science bonus keeps getting better throughout the game while the Babylonian bonus is very early game focused and jungle start bias makes things a bit more difficult for Maya. In later game it translates into as many jungle tiles with trading posts as you please but it slows down the start. Pyramid is a very good UB. Nobody seems to like Atlalists but they let you ignore researching Archery if you want to try to beeline Theology real hard. Long Count gives you Great Scientists but you have to go through a lot of other Great People before you can get a new one. Neither Korea nor Babylon have any UUs or UBs which directly help with science but the Korean ones are much better. Turtle ships are terrifying and come at a very desirable tech.
