Best Civ to start with

What's the best race to start with if you have just begun playing Civ III? I've tried a few races but it never really worked out.

As a Warlord/Chieftain level user I try to go someone who has the wheel already as a tech, then develop horseback riding. This is an extremley good way of taking enemy cities early in the game. I can`t remember what race I am talking about though.

Smart idea is to choose a religious Civ - otherwise a government change at the wrong time can kill you too easily.

Another good idea is to go for either expansionist or scientific. I`d favor scientific, so you get both Temples and libraries cheap. Thus, you`ll be culturally and happiness OK for the first part of the game....

Also, if possible, play a few games using 1.16 patch - this will allow you to save your game with a name including 'multi' - if you then reload you can see the entire map - thus learning from the way the AI plays!

Play the Americans on a huge map. Industrious workers help a lot, and your scouts will reap much treasure from the goody huts. The huge map ensures you have enough time to get started. (Most of the time).

try a civ with a good defensive unit: french or greek. i'd reccommend greek, since their hoplites can easily defend even against horsemen and even knights.

Let's see........when I started out I played the Aztecs. They have a good beginning UU (Jags) and their Religous ability lets newbies skip the annoying anarchy periods before changing govs.

Why that Play the World thing?? Like I haven't seen those screens yet

To start with, industrious is pretty handy for a starter.

expansionist is not important - only really helps in later difficulties when u need to make contact quickly.

scientific also not that important.

religious is handy - quicker expansion of cultural borders, government change thing is handy.

commercial is ok.

militaristic is fun, might get a great leader early on, not necessarily useful tho.

so what does that leave you?
militaristic, industrious - the chinese
industrious, religious - egyptians
industrious, commercial - french

of those i'd choose the french
......
but then again, i prefer the persians and always use them anyway - best UU ever!!!1
