I cannot find any threads on this. Maybe they don't exist?

What I'm wondering is what the best choice of Civilization is, in Test Of Time. I am of course asking mostly about Fantasy, sorta for Sci-Fi (Not fond of it...) and the original, if applicable.

I like the Buteo. They can fly which is quite good for scouting early but they seem to fail, combat wise. They can camp in the skies, which is good but the terrain up there is... less than desirable. I can't see me using them for too long.

I'm kinda interested in the mermans.

It'd be best to state, which 'world' is most desirable too, although I feel surface is the best.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Normally, I play the Goblins. I've played each of the tribes. The Goblins are just the easiest for my normal play style. I play conquest, deity level, massive bribing, minimum trade with other tribes, fanatic. When I played other tribes I used other ways to win. The birds seemed to work best with democracy, massive trade, peace, minimum bribing (only for decent troops). The Infidels work well in conquest. They all play the same to some degree. I just like the Goblins best. The Stygians seem to be the hardest to get wonders with, but they can grow like crazy. Cities everywhere. The Mermen play well in Demo or Communism. Their cities grow large and science rates can be phenomenal. Play them all. See which works best with your play style.
As for me. Call me Org.

I play ToT Fantasy World Deity with Civ Unlimited patch (171 x 171).

For an aggressive conquest victory, Stygians
are the best, for the other endings Merman.

The way I see it; Clouds and Subterranean worlds are each more
limited than the bounteous Land or Undersea worlds,
so the default access for your native mode Settlers is key.

Elves, Humans and Infidels settlers are limited to just 1 world (Land).
(Unless they can find access to Gates of Hell or bribe a barbarian dwarf).

Buteos and Goblins settlers each have a choice of 1 limited and
1 bounteous world.

Merman have a choice of two bounteous worlds.

Stygians have a choice of all four worlds.

This is particularly useful for hitting huts paralleled in multiple
domains e.g. with Stygian Settler or Barrow Wright.

For me, it's unquestionably the Buteos. I've adopted the strategem of bribing as many Krakens as possible, since they can carry Buteo units below the sea into the Underwater realm. That way, I don't need to guard my Merman Settlers quite so much, and having Buteo Great Eagles and the Hero soaring throughout the Underwater world makes exploring so much easier, not to mention helping get rid of those pesky Mermen and Stygians! The only thing is, once the birds are down there, they can't get back to the surface unless a Kraken takes them.

Wanna have your Buteo Hero explore the Underground realm? Make sure you build your first city underground. This only works if your starting place is practically on top of the Gates of Hel.

When you get inter-world teleporting tech, try teleporting Dwarves to the Cloud world or underwater. Watch what happens when you order them to terraform! And have your Kraken "swim" through the sky or have your Shield Boat move through the Underground lakes... you can really mix and match! :D

As for which world I prefer... the Underground, definitely. The only drawbacks are that pollution can be a horrible problem if you don't have enough Settlers, Dwarves, or Goblin Miners. And those awful invisible worm-monsters... :gripe:
