I've kept the poll to English language movies only, because non-Enlgish movies won't get fair treatment.

In a poll like this, "other" is bound to get a high % of the vote. Please remember, there are only 20 options possible in this forum and choices will always be subjective to some extent.

EDIT: the poll was taken by merging the top movies in polls taken by critics and readers for Time Out magazine.

NB: Here is the thread for Best non-English (language) Film of All Time :)

What does english languange movie mean? Any english movie ever? Wow, that has to be.......like older movies? Of Mice and Men was good.

Ooohh... Choosing the best movie is really hard. I chose to stick to your list for simplicity and chose wich i think is best there..

I chose the Godfather, Citizen Kane and Apocalypse Now.

Your list of choices stops in 1982.....it implies that there hasn't been a single movie in the last 20 years that even deserves to be a nominee? I would prefer a more balanced set of choices.

The Shawshank Redemption

There are several on your list that qualify. my fav on this list is once upon a time in the west, with wild bunch a close second

Apocalypse Now!

It was actually voted by a panel of film critics as the best movie in the past 25 years.

The first half of Apocalypse Now was really good, the river ride was okay, but then the Brando part simply wouldn't end.

I can't believe "2001" is on there. You have to really think you are smart to enjoy that one. The ape part is good, but yikes...I've had haircuts more exciting than the rest of it. How can someone honestly say that it is better than say, "Raiders of the Lost Ark?"

if...
Chariots of Fire
Empire of the Sun

I can easily say that 2001: A Space Odyssey is better than Raiders of the Lost Ark. I have the utmost respect for Kubrick's work, and that film was a masterpiece.

I would also nominate A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, and Dr. Strangelove.

(I also voted for the Godfather.)

The new Lord of the Rings. It's probably the only one that made me go, "Wow!"

That, and it's over nine hours! Who can top that? :D

I wholeheartedly agree. I've asked many people who like this movie, and none of them has been able to tell me exactly what this movie means. And what's with the stupid fetus at the end? :crazyeye:

Although I've voted for Wonderful Life, I enjoy and respect Kubrick's work a lot. The meaning of 2001 may be unknown, but the movie is just worth watching it for the arrangement of the pictures/scenes and appropriate music.
Well, Dr. Strangelove is my fav from Kubrick.

From the ones given:
Lawrence of Arabia
Apocalypse Now

(didn't decided and voted yet)

Others:
Hi Noon - Zinneman :king:
North-by-Northwest - Hitchcock :cooool:
Bringing up Baby - Hawks :rotfl:
Barry Lyndon - Kubrick
In the Heat of the Night - Jewison :hammer:

@Simon Darkshade: Empire of the Sun really is a great movie

Only four films really can be considered the "best", Citizen Kane, Chinatown, Casablanca and The Godfather.

Empire of the Sun

Jim: Can I have his shoes when he's dead?
Dr. Rawlins: God you're a pragmatist, Jim.

Schindler's List

Both good movies.

A very odd assortment. Some genuinely great films and some interesting cinema of lesser stature. The unforgivable slight is to Gone with the Wind which is clearly better than at least half of these, even if it is not one's cup of tea. Also odd is the exclusion of Godfather II since it is the better of the pair. I personally lean to Casablanca because I'm a big Ingred fan. A few alternate films for directors you list It Happened one Night, Strangers on a Train, Dr Strangelove, Alien
