What kinds of games and maps would show off Better AI the best? Or whats being worked on currently?

I want to start some Better AI game challenge threads and try to showcase the improvements or help improve the mod.

Better AI games challenges sound like a fantastic idea, both fun and could produce examples of things the AI could do better.

If we're looking for things the AI should do better, then really any and all map types are a good idea ... I would suggest though starting with archipelago, islands, several small continents, or snaky continents. The AI is much better at these maps now, but managing cities and armies across several land areas is a much greater challenge than say a Pangea map.

Definitely looking forward to seeing the challenges and getting feedback!

I have a tendency to use Earth 1000 AD (and variants). Not because it is realistic, or matching how a real game goes, or what have you -- but it is a game I can load half-way through and see how the AI copes with crazy-ass starting situations.

And because it is a 'standard' I can use, I can see how the AI behaves differently than it does usually.

Going from BTS to BTS Better AI does generate a number of marked changes in AI behaviour. Not the least of which is that with Better AI, the European civilisations hunt down and conquor the "barbarian" eastern european civilisations (like a player would).

I have a dream that one day the Mongols will be able to conquor China, like a player can, then go on from there... Or China can completely rebuff the Mongols, like a player can. Either would do. ;)

Or figure out a way to convince Arabs to run over the world.

I think there should be various test cases.

First a fixed map - hopefully filled with stuff the AI currently fails bad at. This fixed map could help to monitor BBAI's rise in power through different versions - and maybe make it possible to see if it really does better.

Another case would be a random map (maybe of smaller size to make it faster).

As far as i understand you cannot simply start BBAI in the middle of a game as it does rely on decisions it make on the game start and does not re-evaluate them later(?).

It is possible to let a 'vanilla' AI play against a BBAI?

You can definitely switch to BBAI in the middle of a game or switch BBAI versions in the middle, the AI constantly re-evaluates its actions and strategies. Starting from the beginning is definitely preferable since the new version is (supposed to be :p ) better, but switching works.

I wish it was easily to play different AI versions against each other ... that would be really interesting.

What i meant was vanilla Elisabeth and Monti vs BBAI Lizzy & Alexander. So you can see if one AI type does 'smarter' decisions than the other.

There wasn't a tool for comparing diferent AI somewhere in the utilities section?

On a good map for testing/showcasing : I agree that earth 18 is a good map for testing. It has a lot of situations that are far of the more common starts ( island starts, mountain landlocked starts, continental starts with parts of it more easily reachable by sea than by land, lots of islands to colonize.... ). I would definitely love to see the Inca settling all the South America or quechua rushing Monty or the mongols falling in top of China and Russia with hordes of keshiks ;)

So are there any plans to start a betterAI challenge thread? Would it be appropriate in the main Strategy and Tips forum? I'll do it if nobody else more qualified wants to.
