It really should work. (Im not a coder but i whould hardly doubt that there is a better way than copying to assure that a file is the same for everyone. Im not even sure if individual equal changes whould work...)
with 18 civs on the huge map each civ could settle 2 valleys and then would compete for further expansion, so I am guessing that 12 should be ok for the standard map.
Well the Valleys are much smaller on standart as well (especially if you consider the many tiles taken up by peeks). So 2 Valleys might not be as much as it sounds there. (its one quater as big as huge i belive. Might be off, but it definately feels much smaller.)
Standart still makes for a neat average game. (i for one find huge rather unplayable). Anything below small seems just to small even for shorter games for me... Large is my usual size. (but i guess that whould be to large for multiplayer with erebus script.)
I have tested a few overcrowded standart maps and 8-10 is comparable to a full huge map (which i did just test once with 16 or so and not in full because of performance...)...
(i have heard of a few 36 civ (one for each leader?) games on creation-mapscript around the forums here on huge maps and they did play out in some good way. So there is an indication that huge really means huge...)
Also with the reduction of size if you lower sea-level you can't extra overcrowd normal maps like before.
Pangea is perfect for quick games with a lot of action. Overcrowd slightly and unless you are landlocked you should be having both AI and human neighbors to interact with.
We like to play with a 50:50 ratio humans and AIs, so that you can do some conquesting, without hurting anybody's feelings.
You should try Full of Resources that includes most of standard map scripts with some options to balance the start locations for MP games (that's why I've started the script).
I tried a game (SP, mind you) yesterday with PerfectWorld and liked the results.
Though I must've accidentally chose a too big mapsize, because the world was friggin' huge for 8 players.
I started in a small edge of forest and grassland with a huuuuuge desert (with a few rivers w/ flood plains in it) seperating me from the rest of the world.
Would've been a major bummer in vanilla, but in FFH, I had this Adept with the Spring spell...

I suspect that only the Erebus mapscript will have marshes in it, because I saw a configuration in that mapscript which determines how many jungles will be marshes.
