Best movie to come out of your neck of the woods

Funny this thread should pop up today - I came back two hours ago from watching a Hindi film called "Yun Hota to Kya Hota" ( translated as "What If . . . ." ) , dealing with four different stories . I don't want to give too much away , so I'll only say that :

Spoiler :

the climax has to do with 9/11 .

Beautiful movie . Brilliant actors , and totally worth watching .

Remember the Titans was filmed at a local high-school. And I assume a lot of political/political-satire movies have been filmed in Washington DC. But I wouldn't know, I'm not a movie buff.

The first movie that came to mind when I thought of movies that have a lot of influence from one specific area was Taxi Driver.

Sadly Tommy is the only movie I know of, it also happens to be a great movie, and coming from a person who hates musicals generally - Paint Your Wagon and Singing in the Rain being notable exceptions - I'd say that's high praise.

What would be the best Austrlian film? Now that is a hard question.

Choper,

And about my claims LOTR was a kiwi movie, i really was joking. This thread was asking for obscure local flims and i was pretending that lord of the rings was one of them. Although it did have alot of new zealanders in it. All of the extras were new zealanders and almost all of the minor roles seemed to be local actors off of shortland street (crap kiwi soap opera), simlar in that respect to the frightners.

The ok the story was british (?) and the stars were from everywhere, the money was america BUT The Director was a New Zealander, The Special effects were made by a New Zealand company and all of the sceenary was New Zealand. I would say that the special effects and sceenary were just as big a part of the movie as the story and stars. (for this movie atleast). On top of that the country got behind the movies to a extent regulary reserved for Rugby and the americas cup. The Airport changed its destination signs to middle earth, the news papers changed there names to Middle Earth Herald (from new zealand herald), We had a director show up at the oscars in his shorts. The Prime minister threw a function for the makers of the movie, and Wellington was closed down for a day for the biggest preimer in the world. When was the last time George shut down washington for a movie?

The Day After was filmed out in Lawrence, about 30 miles outside of KC. That's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of movies in the area. I think Article 99 was filmed out here. Of course, Kansas City was filmed in KC.

lock stock and two smoking barrels, italian job, love actually, harry potter, james bond, bean, captain corelli's mandolin, english patient (directed by an italian-scot :)), Snatch, Layer Cake, Trainspotting, Chicken Run, Billy Elliot, Shaun of the Dead, Ali G in da House, A clockwork orange, etc etc.

English Patient was written by a Canadian, no?

Then again, I am not sure where it was filmed.

Try making a movie with those I bolded and without a script and finance. You'll soon see where the importance lies....

Oh you were joking again? My bad.

But I'm not a fan of movies. I want to find out about movies. How am I to know if you constantly refuse to spill the beans?

Seconded and Thirded LLXerxes' and Eran's post, since we all live in the same place. If you pay attention, Mission Impossible 3 is in Arlington too. Because Tom Cruise lives right across the river from DC.

A classic Washington example, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington.

How much of that film was filmed in Washington?

The best movie to come out in my neck of the woods ...
Being that I'm in the middle of nowhere and miles from anything that remotely looks like Hollywood. In fact I'm about 2000 miles from Hollywood.
But the last film that was filmed around here that maybe anybody ever heard of is STRIPS in 1981. I actually know some of the extra very well, does that make me famous? LOL ... seeing how their part was nameless, short and shot at a distants.
Other than that there haven't been many films made here, but far as purely American films I'm a fan of the oldies ...
Abbott and Costello
Marxs Brothers
Martin and Lewis
Larual and Hardy
etc
Most films made today are made here or there, editted somewhere else, CGI added somewhere else etc etc. Mostly only indies are purely made in one country or area anymore. I have 1000's of DVD's and I have great movies from a lot of counties, I just wish more foreign films were released in R1. I have a region free player but it lacks the feature of the nicer players. Oh well ...

Only thing I can think of for Idaho is "Napoleon Dynamite." It really captures the state's lameness and inherent social awkwardness of its inhabitants very well. As in the movie, so many small towns are at least 10 to 20 years behind the times when it comes to clothing, fashion, etc.

As for Texas, the most memorable movie would be “Office Space” which is a good movie at portraying cubicle life in the Dallas area. In fact, portions of the movie were filmed not to far from where I live.

Manos: Hands of Fate

J/K

I would say Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, although I have no idea at all where is was made.

Even though Fargo is in North Dakota? I know a lot of it is set in Minneapolis, but then isn't the action in Fargo itself?
Almost the whole movie takes place in Minnesota, the first and last scenes are the only ones that take place in North Dakota.

Beyond that the movie was shot in Minnesota. The Cohen brothers are from suburban Minneapolis. Most of the cast and production crew were locals as well.
