What type of movie storyline do you want to see more of?

More historical themes that aren't perverted by the writers. A compelling screenplay could be written about John Adams defending the soldiers in the Boston Massacre without rewriting the history. It would have courtroom drama, ethical dilemmas, and smoky flintlocks on a snowy Boston day. Too bad writers are too lazy to do this.
Ya I agree, Timeline could have been a great movie but they screwed it up and it didn't do too well. Though the book was good story.

Screw realistic movies--we go to the theaters to get AWAY from reality for 90 minutes. :)

Films that make full use of the power granted to them. Films where the impossible actually happens. That's my thing.

A spin off to the "whats wrong with the movie industry?" thread, where some people said the movies are boring and predictable.
So, what basic storyline would you like to see made into a film?

I want to see a big hollywood movie where the bad guy wins. No last minute impossible victory from near death from our hero, no cliffhanger, no chance of revenge in a crappy sequel.
I really cant think of many (if any) big films of the last decade where the bad guy wins. Why is this? Do they think the audience will get angry that the most overused cliche in the industry is broken, that the hero doesnt save the day, get the girl and justice is done? I rekon most of the audience will actually enjoy a good movie that the bad guy wins.

There have been movies like that. Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith is one.

I'd like someone to make a sci-fi movie that runs the same as the book. A lot of sci-fi books have deep themes that give you pause to think, but almost every sci-fi movie I've ever seen degenerates either into flashy special effects without a plot, or political correctness. This is even in those movies that are claimed to be based on books.

Interestingly enough, many of the descriptions here are just slight variantions of the overused formulas. So what the bad guy wins, if the movie still is a cliché with no story to tell and CG every 5 seconds?

What I think lacks today is the hability to be really original. That's what I like about guys such as Charlie Kauffman (and Quentin Tarantino too, but to a lesser extent, since his movies does resemble each other), his work does not fall into formulas - and each movie has a unique identity.

I hope that Kauffman makes a killer profit with his next project, so it encourage studios to finance more guys with the courage to create strange things, like he does.

As for the rest, there are still good ideas around, you just have to look beyond the mainstream to find them. Every year we see things such as "Donnie Darko", or "City of God", or "Dogville", or "Cube", or "Memento", or "Go!", or "Amores Perros" or "Run, Lola, Run", always becoming avaiable for the public who really appreciate the art of movie making.

Regards :).

I want a new Doctor Who movie!

US-led special effects, and with a British-led storyline, it would be a winner!

:)

How about less:

- Movies that lend themselves well to computer game spin offs. Watching a plot that unfolds like levels in a game is predictable and boring (Matrix, LOTR, Batman, Tomb Raider, etc etc zzzzzzz)

- Romcoms. These slushy romantic comedies are getting dull. They are great examples of star power standing in for content. And even the people who go to see them (like my mum) admit they just go to switch their brain off. I mean why not just have a kip instead (for free)?!

- CGI reliant / dominated films, again, story please. (Star Wars episodes, Matrix again, Tomb Radier again)

I agree with Bigfoot, they have gotten away from giving us any characters with depth. This is why the Pixar films are so successful btw, they give us lovable, believable characters.

So let's have more:

- Believable characters and scenarios (and less 'yeah right, as if' moments), give us real and everyday characters if you have to (Million Dollar Baby, Ray, Shine).

- Unknown hero stories (The Aviator, Schindler's List, Hotel Rwanda)

- Stories from around the world by way of collaborations (Motorcycle Diaries, Spirited Away, Crouching Tiger etc)

I want to see more films where there fighting but no definate 'good' or 'bad' guy. I think Troy tried to do this but failed.

Sorry I forget the name, but I agree with whoever it was that said there should be more films with good acting and dialogue and not much reliance on special effects.

That being said, good acting, good dialogue and good special effects would be a film I watch.

More political dramas!

And comedies that don't rely on slap-stick or naughtyness or bodily fluids to be funny.

In general I want characters that you get to know and care for, so that you think it sucks when they die.

And STOP THE OVERTLY USE OF CGI IT DOESNT LOOK REAL, IT LOOKS PLASTIC!

Oh, and use more resources on scriptwriting. A movie can actually be both entertaining and interesting!

Great movies like Apocalypse Now, Falling Down, Taxi Driver, When Trumpets Fade, and The Godfather are of a dying breed if not dead already.

Basically I'd like any storyline that doesn't involve mindless pandering to:

-Political Correctness
-Supposed Morality
-Teenagers

Movies today, suck on an almost fantastical level, its a wonder that people even still go to the theatres. Everything is watered down to PG-13 ratings for absolutely no other reason except to draw a larger audience and increase monetary gain. And film makers openly admit this.

Pearl Harbor for example (besides being one of the worst movies ever made) of this annoying PG-13 trend.

Perception of morality in today’s movies is also annoyingly going back to its roots in the days of the silver screen. A protagonist always does the 'right' thing, no matter what. Of course this is not true for all of today's movies. Man of Fire is a good example.

In the 93' movie Falling Down, a disgruntled government worker goes on a murderous rampage, and the whole time, you are actually rooting for this maniac. The people he's affecting and killing are mostly innocent victims but are also mostly *******s and sleazebags themselves.

Taxi Driver was also like this, where Robert Deniro becomes a murderous skinhead and shoots up a New York brothel in what was one of the most violently honest scenes in movie history. You won't find any honesty like that in today's movies.

Just my 2 cents....

Id like to see storylines where strange beautiful women knock on the door of unsuspecting computer nerds, hand them Hefty bags filled with money, and then plead for sex.

The computer nerd would most likely throw the bag at her, then shut the door in her face, him being extremely paranoid by nature and suspecting a set-up.

Great idea! Why don't you take a stab at writing the screenplay? (No, I am not being sarcastic.)

Uh, no thanks. I couldn't write my way out of a paper bag. There are endless ideas for films throughout history, though. The trouble is the same ones keep getting redone, like The Alamo and Troy.

Another great story that hasn't been done on the big screen is one from my region: Tecumseh. He was one of America's greatest leaders, even against overwhelming odds.

And comedies that don't rely on slap-stick or naughtyness or bodily fluids to be funny.
I agree. I can no longer sit back and allow Cinematic infiltration, Cinematic indoctrination, Cinematic subversion and the international Cinematic conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

I want a movie with no storyline, just explosions. 90 minutes of straight explosions. That would be cool.

Explosions in a particular location?

More sci-fi, perhaps a movie with terraforming as plot setting. And as ligertiger says, painting the future with brighter colours. The typical mega-corporations-take-over-and-rule-everything scenario is getting boring.

I also like to see a movie where the hero dies and his weaker and not so superior friend takes over the fight and win. I hate the way the good guy always have a "normal" friend that you just know is gonna die halfway through the movie.

The problem with the bright and happy future is that there's no reason for it. If you're going to set your movie in the future, it's because you want your hero to face off against something in that future. If it's anything other than an evil government, technology, or uber-corporation, there's no reason not to set it in the present, which would cost less. I'm not arguing against the possibilities of a non-dark future, just trying to explain why it doesn't happen.
