Hi to all and tis is my 1st post.

So the title says it all.

Please help.

I've been playing for a couple of weeks now and I really notice that I end up being "Technologically backwards", even with Scientific Civilizations like Persia. And in order to win a Space Race victory, shouldn't I be on top of everyone else in terms of Technology?

I've tried a couple of tips from various faq writers but I don't think I'm getting the results that I want. I've tried increasing scientific funds but I still end up being technologically backwards.

So what gives?

Thanks

Go find DaveMcW's list of techs that the AI likes to research and don't research those techs... trade for them. Try to put Copernicus's, Newton's, and SETI in the same city. Build lots of libraries, universities, and research labs. There's really a lot more... but one thing most newbies really need to do better for almost all (except OCC games really) *train enough workers (2/city after the expansion phase *at least*) and develop your territory as soon as you can*.

Thanks.

I'll have a look at the faq that you mentioned.

btw, where can I find this faq?

Look for strategy articles in the War Academy.

One thing that can give you a kick-start is to be an expansionist civ and to play with Sedentary Barbarians. If you build plenty of Scouts then you can pop most of the Ancient Age techs from Goody Huts. This strategy gets less useful as you move up through the levels because the Hut results become less favourable.

Welcome to CFC, m1d1!

Take a look at where your budget is going on the F1 screen. Don't build structures that you don't need. Research is all about commerce. For example, if you're shooting for space and aren't interested in culture, you don't need many (if any) temples. If you get enough luxes, build marketplaces and lots of roads, you can keep your people happy without them. That frees up commerce to go into research. Do not hesitate to build what you need for the empire to have, but don't build things just because you can. This goes for military, as well. If you plan on conquering your continent by force so that you can put down tons of science farms, you'll need enough military to do the conquering. If you want to get to space peacefully, you won't need as many soldiers.

Don't underestimate the importance of tech trading. The AI civs will trade techs amongst themselves regardless of whether you trade or not. So if you don't get in on that action, then it's your research capability vs. all of the AI civs combined. You don't necessarily have to be the tech leader to win the space race, but you should at least be competitive.

What version are you playing? If you're playing C3C and can get to Philosophy first, you get a free tech. If you go Alphabet>Writing>Code of Laws>Philosophy, you can take The Republic as your freebie. This is often called "The Republic Slingshot," and (1) allows you go get into Republic pretty quickly; and (2) gets you some free trade bait to sell to the AIs for cash and techs.

Finally, on the last turn of research, turn down the research slider as far as you can without losing a turn. This will allow you to reduce the overrun in the budget which would otherwise be lost. In the early game, that last turn may only be worth an extra gold or two, but later in the game, it can be a significant savings.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies mates!

I just play C3 and not any of the Expansions. (My schedule is pretty tight)

I'll try to get with the links that were posted.

hey guys,

here are the latest to my developments.

I finally being ahead of my oppenents in Technology. I'm in the middle ages right now and I'm starting to have problems with other civs as well. They want most of my techs without even returning a fair amount of gold. Even when I propose to sell some of my Techs to them they don't want to buy it. (Especially Zululand! these guys are starting to annoy me!)

So now I've got Zululand, England, Germany & China against me. And these guys want tech in order for peace but that wouldn't be fair for my side. I need gold and these guys don't aren't giving me in exchange for Techs.

So how do you deal with these guys? I'm just lucky I'm ahead in Techs otherwise I wouldn't be producing enough Knights to defend my territory.

What level are you playing? At levels like Chieftain and Warlord, the AI civs often simply don't have enough gold to make trade very profitable.

If you're handling a 4-front war (Zululand, England, Germany & China) without dying, it's probably time to move up a level. If you're fighting all 4 of them and doing fine, you don't need to give them techs for peace. Go pound a few of their towns into rubble and, soon enough, they'll make peace for free.

As for this game, though, you may want to use those tech to turn a couple of your enemies into allies.

Best way to get advice for this specific game, though, is to post the save.

If they are too stupid to give a reasonable peace treaty, kill 'em. Kill 'em all!

If playing at Regent or above you need to get them Currency and/or Banking as soon as you can. By "get them" I mean you either sell them Currency and/or Banking for whatever price you can get... even as low as 1 gold... or *gift* them those techs and/or any prerequisite techs. If you want the AIs to move faster techonologically and have more money, you'll also want to quit waring with them and then stay that way, even if it means giving them tech for a peace treat.

Kill 'em, kill 'em all will slow down the AIs tech pace and make them more bankrupt, since they stay in/eventually go to Monarchy or Communism or Fascism or Feudalism instead of Reuplic or Democracy. However, it could speed up *your* researching rate, because if you take their cities and have more territory you can have more cities producing beaker by regular commerce, or you can have science specialists in cities corrput areas giving your empire more beakers. This doesn't mean a faster tech pace necessarily though, since the tech pace goes faster when you can trade for a fair amount of tech. This might come as a bit more advanced than your skill level right now (and mine for that matter), but if you check Chamnix's COTM42 spoiler thread posts such as the one here http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=250609 you might get some good ideas also.
