Problem: Chasing yields particularly those from buildings is boring.
How to fix: Make Great people an active way to gain yields.
Example: Great People can have an inspiration meter. It grows in two ways:
Active:
It grows by actively moving them around the map. For example, Great Artist can gain points from moving next to a natural wonder, national park, wonder, etc.
Passive:
Inspiration meter passively grows by having that great person in their respective district. Additionally while in that district the city receives a boost to their respective yield.
Overall:
When they reach certain inspiration meter thresholds they can then activate their special ability and create an artwork. Great people like levied city-state units have a timer. You recruit one they then last for x turns. So for the x turns that your Great Artist is alive you're running around the map actively trying to fill your inspiration meter to get as many paintings as possible out of them while weighing that against maximizing the time spent in a city to boost culture yields.
To make this experience more dynamic Great People could be killed by other civ's/ Barbarians or possibly stolen adding more to the tension to this gameplay.
Conclusion: I believe a change like this could do a lot towards making the game feel less passive and boring and more active in terms of chasing better yields.
