Played Civ since 1992.

Got a little tired of BTS.

Was so looking forward to CIV 5.

Got really disappointed. Quit playing. Have not played since.

Rant:
Civ 5 was not upgrade! It is a bad Civ clone!!! They changed the core of the game. I played civ 1 for years, got civ 2, civ 3 and civ 4. ALL UPGRADES that improved a brilliant game without changing the core concept and basic gameplay. All I wanted was some new graphics, units, techs, nations and concepts like religion or culture. Civ 5 feels like it is playing by itself. No clear cause and effect. Turns just happening. Time passes. I bet you heard t all before a million times on this forum, right?

I played civ since I was 19. I am 40 years old now. I miss my Civilization...

Questions / Options:

1. Was I wrong? Shall I give Civ 5 another try?

2. Go back to BTS? Enough time passed so I should enjoy it after a long break.

3. Start playing BTS online? Not slow? I would suck after several years break...

4. Custom mods? Suggestions? A fork would be nice. Some serious game company should make a real CIV 5.

Cheers,

Johnny

I play BTS with BUG/BAT. I drift off to other games, but I always come back to it eventually. Same with Alpha Centauri.

What's right for others may not be right for you. I didn't like CivII because I had trouble distinguishing the graphics among several different unit types. Was I wrong for not liking that? lol.

Civ 5 is another game to me. It has forked. I can't see myself liking CIV 6 unless they go back to the original gameplay. It seems like you have played Civ as long as I have. Did you like civ 5? Did you have to learn to like it? Sure, you did not like some graphics in civ 2 and I did not like that culture got too important in Civ 3 but still did not stop me playing or loving the game! This is different.

Hi Johnny ! ;) Welcome to the Forums :D [party][party]
You should give Civ 4 another go. Mods are a good idea ! I suggest Fall From Heaven 2 if You like fantasy ;)

Civ 5 is plain awful, like you I disliked some aspects of earlier civ games, but I liked other things and it didn't stop me getting hooked. Civ 5 is the first where I disike most of the core game and can't bear to play it.....

So go back to civ 4 ;)
If you find yourself getting bored of the same old and merely changing the settings and/or upping the difficulty isn't enough, then theres lots of mods available in the creation and customisation forum, my favourites being Dune Wars, Fall From Heaven 2 and The History of Three Kingdoms.
Heres a link to where most of the bigger mod projects can be found.

You should try to install the Civ 4 Rise of Mankind Mod; It completely improves upon the gameplay by adding additional content.

Thanks for the link! Yes, the CIV 5 core is different and not as good as the good old stuff? Sure, you get a settler and you found your first city but then it just starts to suck.

Quadruple post, FTW.

BUG: BTS Unaltered Gameplay mod. Doesn't change the rules of the game, just makes information about what's going on much more accessable.

The BAT mod (not sure what it stands for) makes graphical improvements.

BUG/BAT are game improvement mods, found in the mod section. Pretty much all the newer mods are using it to improve gameplay. You can read about it in the mods thread :).

One of many BUG examples...

You can tell if an AI is planning a war by opening diplomacy with them and seeing if they are 'too busy right now' or words to that effect. So, if you open diplo with EVERY AI, EVERY turn, you can keep an eye out for war planners.

Or you can get BUG to check it for you. It doesn't alter the game play, because the information is in fact available and a smart player would want it, but without BUG actually getting that info is horribly tedious. With BUG it shows as an icon next to the score on the main screen.

BAT, on the other hand, is just for looks. When you are bored with your Spanish swordsmen fighting HRE swordsmen that look just like them, then turning to fight barb swordsmen that look just like them, then marching on to fight some Russian swordsmen that also look just like them, it's time for BAT. I'm not usually an 'eye candy' sort, but it is a HUGE improvement.

"Beyond the Sword Artistic Tweaks" is what I was told by ruff_hi when I took it over.

BAT also includes all of the BUG Mod in one handy, eye catching package. :D

OP - I know exactly what you mean. I'm 10 years younger and I never played Civ 1, but I skipped many a high school days playing Civ2. Civ3 and the expansions were exciting, and of course Civ4 has been amazing. Civ 5 is just bad and boring.
So what can you do? Mods are about all you can do until something else comes out. I would suggest trying Kmod. It's a vast improvement of the game without big changes. Check it out. Otherwise there's not much to do but try different games. Or, you could even start modding Civ 4 yourself ;)

Johnny, you sound like many of us on here.
Most on here didn't like the drastic changes done in Civ5.

1. Only when you want to remind yourself why you stopped playing it.

2. In short, Yes.

3. That's up to you. I'd refamiliarize youself with Civ4BTS again first. Then get really good, meaning not just playing noble and prince level games. There is a War Acadamy here on this site for information others have picked up along the way. There are also interesting posts in the Civ4 Strategy Articles section such as this one on knowing the AIs. http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=478563

4. In the "Civ4 - Strategy & Tips" section they often post games of different levels of experience. Just look for the Noble, Monarch, Immortal or Deity in the title. Many people use the Bug mod a lot there.

Better BAT AI mod in Lemon Merchant's sigature is also good for single player games.
Here are a few I found to work well in multiplayer LAN games as well.

VIP mod, http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=398499

Caveman 2 Cosmos is a very impressive huge mod. So be prepared for a longer load time, but everyone should see the work put into this one at least once. http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=444594&highlight=Caveman+Cosmos
When you can encounter Neanderthal on land or Orca's at sea, resourses like Apples or terrain like Tar Pits, you know you've seen the ultimate in what has been done for Civ4. Just make sure you have a powerful computer, it is known to have errors towards the end for weaker computers.

And again, welcome to the forums! :)

Wohoo. Not only does VIP have an upcoming modmod, but its also hitting the "recommended mods"-lists.
And thats even without half of lemons eye catching package. :mischief:

Joking aside, I'm 37 and started civ'ing one year after you. Everystep of the way (except revolutions). I somehow wished we had all played revolutions, coz maybe then we could have stopped the horrible (d)evolution civ 5 took. The worst was their "Big sloppy kiss" *.

* Interview – Civilization V’s Producer Dennis Shirk - Fri, Jul 09, 2010
Spoiler :

Could we maybe see a Civilization V: Revolution? Will Civ V ever come to consoles?

The thing is, Civ V is a big sloppy kiss/love letter to our fan community. We want it to be for the hardcore. We want to make it as accessible as possible, but Civ Rev kind of took care of that route. It’s for the people who want the kind of Civ-lite [experience]. Civ V is for hardcore PC. We’re PC game makers for the most part, and like I said, we’ve gone into the console market for some stuff, but we’re gonna make PC games first for a long time.

Worst part is they had their work cut out for them. All they really needed was upgrading graphics (they did, but... not very efficient, and not always for the better (rivers anyone?) and make it 64 bit.
or even better, for a possible game of the year, add parts of mods present at the time (Rise of Mankind, Revolution, BUG etc).

I think one or two weeks went by, then I started my VIP mod (which was in some way already a modmod of RoM). Whenever I feel the need to play a "newer" version of civ, I simply go to the civfanatics civ5 forum and read a couple of the first posts (usually Civ5 Rants), and within seconds I'm back at civ4
