It does not have the up/down scroll bar on the side...
When I was playing the game, it suddenly zoomed out and it is so far out that it is hard to see what is going on. I think it was at a certain point that the game automatically zooms out.
When you discover Calendar the map automatically zooms out. If you can't figure out how to zoom your map on your laptop, you can get back to the focus that you had by saving the game and then reloading it. It will load up at the default zoom level, not the one that Calendar zoomed you to. Another option for you is to install BUG mod. It has an optional zoom slider in the upper right corner that you control by sliding the control with your mouse pointer.
Thirded. I can't understand how anyone could use a trackpad as their primary method of moving the cursor! A mouse (or "pointing device" as Microsoft calls them) is so much more convenient.
On most trackpads I've used, the right hand side is bound to scroll up/down, and the LEFT side is for zoom.
As it happens on this laptop Civ 4 seems to respond to both sides (scroll and zoom) by zooming, but even if right side didn't work try left side anyway - it's possible your touchpad has no slide sensitivity on the right side.
Also you may have turned these functions off (unlikely if you have no mouse maybe) but it'd be worth checking in control panel/mouse settings anyway. There will be some way to get your trackpad to do it - this kind of function is precisely what trackpads are for! On some, especially older ones, you may have to hold CTRL down.

That's because civ uses the mouse wheel for zoom controls.
Personally I find trackpad use frustrating. A mouse feel so much easier, especially since you can click simply by tapping it, so if you apply more than the slightest amount of pressure you click. It's very easy to click without intending to.
