Black Screen when starting new game

Ok this is a weird one (for me anyway).
I played a game on easy level, and won it. Felt dead chuffed, though it was easy so i suppose nothing special.

Tried to start another new game on a harder difficulty level, went through all the options to generate the world, and it starts the bit where it builds the world.
Then when you get to the bit where it you click to play game once the world has been built it, when you click it the screen goes blank, and then my monitor turns itself off!? The music is still playing, but you generally have to restart the computer. Sometimes you can alt-tab back to desktop and close CIV4 that way, but most of the time not.

Any ideas? I don't know if this has been mentioned before - i had a quick scan through the threads but couldn't see anything.

Could you post your computer specs? Otherwise we'd all just be guessing.

Will do as soon as i get home. Can't remember them off the top of my head.

What makes it bizarre is i started a game and played no problem. Then it didn't work. Then it did again for one game, but now its stopped again.

Did you start your new game on a larger map size? Larger maps use more ram and could cause game to crash if you don't have enough ram. Did you install any new software or change any game/system settings recently? Seems very odd for it to just stop working like that. Also try a virusscan, disk check, and defrag your hd. If it worked before you should be able to get it working again so don't give up.
