Hardware acceleration was set to maximum before.
That could be the problem. Reduce it to the level, which is recommended when having font problems. Maybe your GPU fails to print fonts for unknown reasons while the software rendering can handle it.

Thinking about it, I think there is a setting for software rendering. You could try to start without any mod, look through the settings to find it and switch to software rendering. Once set, load the mod and see if that change anything. I think it would be under video settings, but I can't remember.

Reducing the level didn't help.
I didn't found any software rendering option in Civ4 options menu.

Well... I've just realised that my current PC is notebook and has two videocards - Intel Family 3000 and GeForce that I've named before. As long as I have WinXP them two can't switch between each other because of architecture of XP... If I should believe the Internet. And my BIOS have options of only "Integrated" and "Switchable", so I didn't use my nVidia for very long time, since I first reinstalled windows (It was pirate Win7, whose graphics caused big freezes - 15 sec for background changing made it freezed almost forever with periodical (not in time though) change of background... So I've decided to install winXP which don't have such big lags)...
So now I'm going to try installing Win7 again.

After all, windows 7 runs DoC perfectly even without nVidia drivers installed from old installation on old winXP. And the OS don't lag now. That's good. The problem wasn't really solved, but it's just dissapeared. Thank you all for quick and good help, I'm glad to talk to adequate people :)

I'm glad you finally got to play the mod, even if we couldn't help you figure out the original problem. I really recommend Win7 over XP anyway, with XP support discontinued (if your copy even benefited from that in the first place ...) it is very unsafe, and Win7 has the better user experience imo.

I will not recommend any windows for the user experience (I think it sucks in general, regardless of version), but I fully agree that XP is problematic from a security point of view. If you have a reason for still using XP, then I would highly recommend to never put it on the internet. Pirated software is also something, which should never be used or connected to the internet. It's usually full of phone home spyware or similar. Download and install some game and suddenly some guy in China has taken control of your WoW account and given all your gold and items to a stranger.

We're in the Civ4 C&C forum so Windows is basically a given, I was speaking from that assumption.

Ok, I wasn't that clear. I wouldn't recommend any version of windows due to user experience. I would recommend using windows to play games written to run in windows. The end result is the same, but it's a different argument.

Another argument for windows 7 is that since XP has been dropped, new games can't run in XP anymore. They would run on the same computer if it runs windows 7 instead. Since it's a question about which files are present in windows, it would affect games where the computer meets the system requirements.

At the same time I wouldn't recommend anything newer than windows 7 if you plan on playing old games.

There are plenty of arguments towards using windows 7 on a computer you plan on using for gaming. I just wouldn't place user experience very high on that list.
