Blender, Texture paint, and exporting DDS

I repainted a model in Blender with texture paint, and it seemed to read and write to the DDS just fine. My UV map in blender is showing up as I painted it with texture paint. However, when I exported it, it came out as a 1 KB file, and none of my paint programs recognize it. For Blender to be reading it, it has to be reading it in some form, so my work must still be salvageable. I tried exporting it as jpg or gif, but it just renamed it skin.gif.dds.

OK, I exported it as a bmp, and it worked, thankfully, but still, any idea why it can import, read, and edit a dds properly, but not export properly?

EDIT: NM, I converted it back into DDS in GIMP, and it worked fine. An extra couple of steps, but I can live with it.

EDIT 2: However, now the file is 193 KB, instead of 33 KB. Anybody know of a way to reduce the file size back to the smaller amount? In GIMP, there are a whole bunch of compression options, but I don't feel like testing each one to see if they work in Civ IV. Anyone know the correct compression... or if it even matters?

Edit: found the answer: dds dxt3

Edit 4: The file is still twice as large as the original, there must be another compression. If you know, please let me know.
