Blid-01- A ring to rule them all

but there's no point in having archers once we have axes and swords. Useless tech which should be obtained with trading.

:woohoo: we got metal to forge the ring. I think construction is no more a priority. We need to set a new goal. Keeping the beeline to alphabet while preparing to attack Alex suits me fine
Once alphabet is in, we really should try for colossus. GL would be risky and is not a great help if our goal is to eliminate all other civs coastal cities and then proceed to invasion inland. The culture points are also welcome to push away civs wanting to settle on the ruins of ancient cities
IIRC, Mansa new city is on original location for Paris. He is either very close or settled far from capital. Not very wise he may find it
BTW, no goto orders between turnsets please. We can use signs

turn 0 - don"t revolt, rearrange Paris for Axeman in 2, fortify archer
1 - stupid barb warrior attacks archer, archr wins without scratch, stupid barb archer goes to jungle instead of hill, promoted archer to jungle.Paris back to food.
2 - archer defeats barb archer without scratch
3 - meet Genghis Khan !
4 - Paris : axeman > axeman; axeman to Orleans, gems ready :)
5 - Writing in, open borders with everyone (no nasty fellows), research Animal Husbandry (in 4, want to see horses)
6, 8 - some wrestling with barbs
9 - AH comes in, there are horses in the north where we planned our third city, research Alphabet
10, 20 - Mansa Musa founds cofucianism and (probably) taoism, scouting warrior makes roudabout through egyptian territory to avoid chasing barb archer, alphabet almost researched, Orleans finally completes barrack.

Think we must become good friends with Mansa, he has no coastal city's (yet) (a reason to settle quickly near the horses), and he's annoyed with Alex. Are we making army for Alex (already 4 axeman) or first make settler for the north? Our hammer production is still very poor ...

IMO, cripple Alex frist. With any luck, Mansa will leave the horse site be. It is rather crappy
switch to slavery and whip swords if necessary

i agree, alex has bronze laready, don't give him a chace to start producing army. Too bad we don'thave any sea food, once we have writing ->library we shuold hire couple of scientists.

On turn 2 alphabet came in. Looked around for possible trades. Hatty was the most backwards and had no religion, so I traded Writing and Pottery to her and received Fishing, Masonry and Mysticism. Research set to Metal Casting.

On turn 3 I traded Alphabet to Asoka for Mathematics. The only other AI with Mathematics was MM, and there's no way he's getting Alphabet. I hoped Asoka wouldn't trade it to him because they have different religions. Normally I hate trading away an alphabet monopoly, but I really wanted Mathematics to chop a library more efficiently. I apologise if this was :smoke:.

On turn 5 I demand Meditation from Alex. He gives it to us. I then declare war before most of the army had arrived to capture a worker.

On turn 6 the Confucian Shrine was build by MM. I chopped a sword in Orleans and a library in Paris.

On turn 7 Asoka wanted me to cancel deals with Genghis. No one likes Genghis except the warmongers (HC, alex) because he is the only Hindu. Genghis dislikes us for declaring on Alex (warmongerrespect) so I agree. The pyramids (unknown) and the Parthenon (Thebes, Egypt) are BIDL.

On turn 8 we capture Sparta with the loss of 1 axeman. Capture another worker. We had to delete our scouting warrior because he is trapped between Genghis' culture.

In the remaining turns I scout Greece. Alex has 3 more cities. I pillage a pasture and a farm. I cannot pillage the iron because it is defended by a combat 1, shock axeman. There doesn't look like a city I can realistically raze with the army available. Also, a combat 2 phalanx appears through Mali near Orleans threatening to pillage our lands. I therefore sue for peace, getting Priesthood. A barb axeman appeared near paris so I switched to slavery just-in-case. In the end we killed him with the loss of an archer. I did not whip any cities.

Other highlights:

Refused a request from HC to cancel deals with MM.

We have Taoism in Orleans. No one is currently Taoist.

My SGOTM team would be proud of me because I bothered with binary science.

Paris worked 1 scientist when the library came in. When a farm was built it was able to work a second scientist.

A settler is due in 3 turns.

I played 19 turns because Metal Casting came in on the last turn. I tentatively selected construction. Camps are being built on the ivory.

France and Greece:

Good job sooooo. Alex accepting demands, WTH ? He lost only one city, but the two workers rob should help cripple him more. I hope we can get this horses site

My SGOTM team would be proud of me because I bothered with binary science

:) ouccch spoiler

Don't know about the alphabet thingy. Asoka is score leader here, hope he won't get too much ahead in techs.

We need to be in line on diplo strategy. It will all depend on which direction we want to forge the ring, but we have already 2 enemies : Alex and Genghis. Befriend their enemies and ignore their friends. If we manage to keep Mansa from settling the coast, we may have a reliable friend. Adopt confucianism if it spreads
do we know sailing ? a galley or 2 can help dispatching rescue units fast and a lighthouse is needed everywhere :)

capital should start colossus just when MC is discovered. It seems like AI have been wondermonegring here

Well I was writing these and figured I was up when writing roster. sooooo, do you mind posting the save ?

Ha, I knew there was something I forgot. We don't have sailing. Paris can start the Colossus now but it will have to abandon its scientists.

EDIT: We need a forge before it will let us build the colossus.

Well, after loading the save, Genghis is definitely one of the early enemies
I'll wait for some comments from the team so I'll probably play tommorow night

I think I'll let capital finish axe then start forge->colossus

- that was a gamble leaving Orleans alone with only one warrior...(i'm too cautious for that), but we really needed Sparta :)
- research Sailing (2turns only) first imo, maybe then we can get calender from somebody... i wouldn't mind to trade with Metal Casting ( so few coastal city's), then research Construction.
- MM settles next to us and then blames us for bordertensions
- which spot near the horses do you want to settle ? south-east means very few health-points, south-east-east (hill) is fresh water but very little hammers.. EDIT: i prefer south-west of horses, that takes corn and more hammers.
- in the (near) future we can settle between Paris and Sparta for a nice science-city and grab the corn...
- Genghis Khan soon will come with Keshiks..
- Paris : force > finish axe-man is shield-wiser

Good luck !

Some comments from the peanut gallery :) First off, you're doing really well given the variant, and that iron is great - when I tried it, though I didn't luck out with metals, I was a lot luckier with seafood (clams in my capital, fish in my second city.)

From my experience, you really need to focus on expansion! Remember, you can't use war to grow unless you stumble on a coastal city (where'd you find one of those? :mischief:). You fight wars to push people back while crawling over the coast. Going to war is generally a losing situation for you - if you war and destroy a civilizations, it gains you nothing unless it opens up new coastal spots (e.g., Sparta ) while other civs eventually fill in the gaps and become more dangerous. With your conquest and the settler coming for a horse spot, you're doing well with this. But you need to be really relentless! Just think how far along the shore you'll be when you have even 7 cities... and you'll need a lot more than that to win, unless you go for cultural.

I'd definitely get the Great Lighthouse sooner rather than later, simply for the boost to your economy.

One thing I observed in my game, after a nasty war with either Huayna or Monty where I had lots of my cottages pillaged, I was expecting my economy to tank. But you know what? With the Colossus + Great Lighthouse, it didn't. Even in the early game, any coastal city can usually give you 10 commerce from the day it's settled (3 from a coastal tile, 1 from city tile, 6 from trade routes.) Protecting the happiness (to work more coastal tiles) and general (to defend my cities proper) resources is important, of course.

G'luck, and :goodjob: so far!

few things i noticed -

- Capital is a bad place to run those scientists with all that production, put back those hills in the game.
- you need to learn how to beg, i.e ASK Mansa for Saling. Dont waste time on it. ASK hatty for poly, etc.
- Trade metal for all those techs, CoL, whatever. After Construction go for CS.
- dont neglect military, since both Alex and Khan will attack.
- forget any wonders at this point.

-I'm not sure if i'm correct but you get only 1 or 2 times when you beg , so better beg for more expensive techs than sailing imo
- hopefully Sparta and Orleans can do the military thing....

no you can beg sailing from munsa, and poly from hatty
sailing is cheap tech they wont give you expensive ones
you can beg many times in the game

Well the beggin worked well with Mansa but Hatty and Asoka won't give us poly
Lot of tech trading went there so we got calendar, poly, COL, monarchy, currency and some gold. I ran all my turnset at 100% and there is still 80 in the treasury (we are at -11 gpt )
Alex shows asking us to stop trading with Mansa hmmm, won't comment on this
Taoism has spread in sparta and paris. I really would have preferred confucianism

Even after the war, Alex likes our neighbourhood. He settled on that plain hill and picked the corn on my second or third turn so I couldn't make an opportunity attack

We will soon have access to horses (pasture is ready). If we chop, Lyons will hit the unhealthy cap quickly so be gentle with forests there

02-LyonsFounded.jpg

This is the tech situation at end of turn. Hatty is the only one to have literature

03-techs.jpg

Check the resources screen from time to time. If there is a health resource, trade our happy resources for it. We can convert to HR if needed but I prefer to wait for CS to finish (due in 16 turns) to do a double civic change

Sparta finished the barracks and started a forge
Capital finished a forge then started a granary. This was :smoke: as it needs an aqueduct. I would finish axe then aqueduct->granary but I'll let next player decide. I don't want to stack two buildings in the queue in an SG
Lyons started a granary and Orleans went settler->granary->forge

Acid, I've been thinking why we shouldn't build GL and colossus as they are useful for this variant and we are industrious so tell me which one of these answers are right if it is there :
  1. Wonders are for sissies. Get some infra, build army and cleanse the earth from heathen inlanders
  2. AI settled coast later so we can build infra and still get the wonders in time with our industrious trait
  3. Colossus and GL would be on the ring path so we'll be getting them sooner or later
  4. Obiwan Kenobi

soooo

1AD save

all 4 of them.
The only place to produce Colosus is in our capital, and i would prefer to build some army there, as i DONT trust Khan and Alex. They WILL attack, and we have zero military. As for GL, it's too late, since we didnt went straight for literature. Hatty will have GL by the time we have CS.
Ofcourse, I'm not the only one who plays this game, so whatever the team decides, i'm just giving my suggestions. That's why i'll wait for some more discussion for the general flow of the strategy.
It is a shame we dont have any seafood and can't run some specialists.

We have about the same power as Alex but Gengis is on a strong curve and he has horses. I guess some spears are mandatory

@armstrong : thanks for sharing your experience. Did you manage to have the whole ring in your game or you won before that ?
