Blid-01- A ring to rule them all

Exactly, blid. It's a phrase that refers to "unrealistic optimism" that predates anime, I'm sure. The earliest reference I can recall are the lyrics to a Gershwin classic, But Not For Me: "I never want to hear from any cheerful Pollyanna..."

I played 10 builder turns as suggested. Almost certainly my last turns too. If it comes round to me again I won't be able to "get it" until 29th June at the earliest.

Hatty has now built her first mech infantry! Should have declared earlier.

It's the first time someone (Mansa) has refused to trade me something (Rocketry) because "We'd rather win the game, thanks!".

Spent my turns building Jails, Transports and Infantry. Did not change civics because I didn't want the anarchy. Feel free to do so when we're at war. We got artillery on my 9th turn so I then turned science to 0%. We currently have 769 GP in the bank. Mansa asked for a defensive pact and I said yes in an attempt to improve relations. Otherwise he'd just sign one with Hatty.

Hatty has built all of her casings and thrusters. Mansa has his casings and 1 or 2 thrusters built. I'd like to see Mansa win the space race rather than Hatty because he's been our friend the whole game.

Once we've got enough gold for bribery purposes I suggest flight for the next tech. MM will want less for the war once we've declared, but it's tough to predict how much less.

Well, if you ever play a take two of this game you should play on Epic speed and be faster on the conquering. even if you could actually take those coastal tiles, you have no option of wining. (Someone built the U.N?)

No. I'm supporter of Hattsy. Mansa has deserted us against Asoka.Anyone in favour of Asoka???

Kikinit, if you are australian, do you want Guus Hiddink as your president?;)

Our last clutch at a straw (is this correct english?): We can demand 880 gold from Asoka!

I think this is a design flaw: when you ask 10 gold Asoka gives in, but second time he refuses. But if you ask 880 in gold at once , he gives in....

GUUUUUSSSS... Yes I think he has imortalised himself in Australia and that's not easy to do in Australian sport as we've got quite a few heroes. Most of the country will go back to normal service of ignoring football once Australia's out anyway but it's made a mark. Even the aussie rules football forums are talking about football...

On this game, who's up?

Frankcor, you are UP. Make us some money. I think we need about 4000-5000. if we have too much, we'll use it to upgrade cannons. Don't know how much we are doing per turn.
Also, we can try to pull a GA in capital. If we ever manage to take a coastal city, it will help to defend the city

congrats Kikin for aussie qualification :goodjob:

I will try to pick it up and play tonight. My contractor began renovating my bedroom this morning so I had to yank my computer from there last night. I'm going to attempt to re-establish an internet connection in the livingroom tonight. If I'm successful, I'll post a "got it." If you don't hear from me by late tonight, feel free to consider me Out-Of-Pocket for the weekend and skip my turns.

And I was sooo looking forward to kicking Hatty's butt tonight ...

Thanks blid, Glad to see France made it this time. They do like to make it difficult for themeselves don't they?

Inherited Turn (1935 AD) I hire two artists in Paris. That gives us 24 gpp/turn with 289/600. If my arithmetic is correct (311 divided by 24, that's 1 carry the two, or 3? nevermind, where's my calculator?) that's 13 turns. A Great Person won't happen in my turnset but soon after.

We're currently looking at:
- Great Artist - 30%
- Great Merchant - 60%
- Great Scientist - 8%

The great artist odds will improve as we fill up more points.

We currently have 769 gold, adding +630 per turn at 0%. I'll check in with Mansa every turn.

Turn 347 (1936 AD)
Sparta finishes: Artillery > Bank
Sorbonne finishes: Jail > Courthouse
Ollantaytambo finishes: Jail > Artillery
Lahore finishes: Transport > Artillery

Turn 348 (1937 AD)
Lyons finishes: Transport > Factory
Tours finishes: Infantry > Artillery
Machu Picchu finishes: Infantry > Artillery
Marseilles finishes: Transport > Infantry
Bangalore finishes: Forge > Infantry

Turn 349 (1938 AD)
Sorbonne grows: 8
Orleans finishes: Jail > Artillery

Turn 350 (1939 AD)
Sparta finishes: Bank > Artillery
Tabriz finishes: Infantry > Artillery
Kolhapur finishes: > Artillery

Turn 351 (1940 AD)
Rheims grows: 10
Marseilles grows: 12
Paris finishes: Infantry > Artillery
Marseilles begins: Colosseum :whipped:
Ratz, I let Marsielles grow unhappy. I whip a Colosseum for them to enjoy. Somehow, feeding Christians to lions seems to cheer people up?

Turn 352 (1941 AD)
Sparta finishes: Artillery > Grocer
Ning-hsia finishes: Artillery > Infantry
Libyan finishes: Artillery > Infantry
Marseilles finishes: Colosseum > back to Infantry
Ollantaytambo finishes: Artillery > Infantry

Turn 353 (1942 AD)
Machu Picchu grows: 12
Bangalore finishes: Infantry > Artillery

Turn 354 (1943 AD) 5938 gold, still no deal with Mansa
Sorbonne grows: 9
Ollantaytambo grows: 12
Orleans finishes: Artillery > Infantry
Sparta finishes: Grocer > Artillery

Turn 355 (1944 AD)
Lyons grows: 11
Sparta finishes: Artillery > Infantry

Turn 356 (1945 AD)
Lahore finishes: Artillery > Infantry

Three turns to a Great Person in Paris. We're 38% Great Artist /50% Great Merchant.

My vision must be fading. With 7317 gold, I approach Mansa. He tells me "Fear my Modern Armor" which has a certain aggressive undertone to it. And the option to declare war on Egypt is RED!

You know? If it wasn't the end of my turnset, I'd kick his butt before kicking Hatty's.

Okay, got it. War is imminent :D Hope Mansa would change his mind then. The cost is less when you are already in war the civ

Sure, the kind of things that can give you a heart-attack. There is a doctrine saying (care there, this is my translation) : "always imagine the worst, you will never be disappointed". With the french team, you learn to practice it very well :crazyeye:

off topic: conqruetulations Blid, there first worldcup-victory since they became worldchampion in 1998! Kikinit%Blid you may finish off eachother in 1/2-finale, i'll beat sooooo in 1/2-finale then beat the winner of you two in finale!

@blid: demand Asoka's money.

Turn 0 : First act of arrogance. Asperge has a special message to deliver to Asoka.

01-DemandMoney.jpg

He promptly agrees

We didn't manage to get this tile near Karakorum. It is still 58% egyptian. All I can hope for is to stay in cities and watch Hatty units come kill us

I call Mansa and drop the defensive pact. I ask hatty if she would help us with a poor 100g and she argues that she's financing a great space project and can't afford that. And then I make my bravest greatest folly war declaration in CIV

02-DeclareWar.jpg

Mansa is still greeting us with this :

03-MMDontHelp.jpg

I realize immediately that something lacked. Infantry guys were not promoted. I promote a bunch to CGII but loose the fortification bonus. Arghhhh

Then I press enter and it was about the longest IBT I ever had. Hatty put a long time placing her troops

Egyptian fighters and bombers start making a mess of our cities
Hatty suicided a good number of her gunships against Tabriz. They had horrible odds (<5%)
Some mech inf attacked too. Their odds were not much better and no one of them succeeds

Hatty killed an ironclad with a destroyer too

Turn 1 :

First kill Hatty destroyer

In the north, the stack is resonably small and Hatty has only 3 artillery there. If she starts bmbarding city, I will attack but for the moement, the 60% defense + hill is nice. I will just wait and watch

Since MM won't attack, I upgrade a lot of rifles to infantry.

In the south, there are 3 stacks.

04-FirstWave.jpg

I attack the one having artillery to soften it. It is also the biggest one.
I can't see all the units but there are cavalry visible so the remaining ones don't matter

IBT : this one was ever longer. It reminds me of civ3 IBT. Ehmmm, it went less smoothly this time. Surprised ?

First, Hatty used artillery to bombard. Then units started attacking in what it seems like an eternity as I saw all my units disappear. A mech inf vs axe combat was fun (but quite short). Tabriz held but at the end, it had only 3 artillery and 3 cannons left. Hatty lost too few units. Even her artillery were withdrawing from combat

In the north, things are better. The units in the city hold though Hatty started by bombarding the city down to 15% defense

For those wondering if UN was built :

05-UNVote.jpg

I abstain

Turn 2 :
I finish Hatty stack at Bangalore and kill her wandering gunships trying to pillage the towns

In Tabriz, I send artillery to soften the stacks. I also send units from Tours leaving it lightly defended. Even with that, I think that Tabriz is lost next turn.

A transport with infantry is coming from Bangalore but he will probably get to Tabriz too late

IBT :

Vote results. We have enough votes to make Mansa win

06-UnVoteResult.jpg

Tabriz falls as expected
We will not take Tabriz back anytime soon. Look at those stacks

07-TabrizFalls.jpg

Turn 3 :

We pop a great artist. Will we find a use for ya ?

Hatty is pillaging around Tabriz because the tiles are still in french cultural influence

Turn 4

Hatty shows with modern armor. I fear even the north will suffer soon

09-ModerArmorAppears.jpg

Nearly all the cities are starving cause we lost a lot of health resources. I do a round of whipping

Turn 5 :

To prove we are really a miserable civ, look at this

08-MMgaveussomechange.jpg

Never had this before, a present from MM. Wait, is he trying to make me vote for him ? Oooooooh, smartass AI

IBT :

Hatty is bombarding us with stealth bombers  She starts attacking Tours

We get a vote for non proliferation treaty. I was hoping to end the game with a vote for MM. Won't have the chance

Turn 6,10 :

Under stealth bombers, artillery and modern armor, I was loosing all the units I place in Tours. Meanwhile, gunships were having fun pillaging everywhere. IBT were so long I just alt-tabbed to watch football until the sound of lost battles stops :)

The red messages then will keep coming almost until I finish making my moves for the turn

I guess it is a good time to retire. This is the first SG I loose and it had to happen in the one I hosted :)
The techwhole was too large to hope for anything. Maybe with a shrine and more fertile lands, we could have made it. This is really a game about speed and we were not fast enough. T'was fun playing with you guys. See ya around in other SGs

So I assume you are german ? Nice start you had today :goodjob:

Nice try blid. At least we never waivered from our variant goal. It's my first loss in an SG too, but it was a fun try. Good work all  . Next time we probably want to discuss things a little more like techs etc. but we've worked pretty well together as a team.

Enjoy the rest of the world cup. I hope Australia give me a chance for a few more sleepless nights :D .

oh no i'm dutch. Thanks Blid for the sg. first sg, first lost:D . Think difficulty of this variant can be compared with emperor, it was soon clear it would become difficult but i have learned some things from different playstiles. But techresearch (and city-placement and warring) must be discussed first imo. Everybody :goodjob:

Great game. Given how much trouble I had on Prince, I knew this was going to be tough, but you all did really well and it was one heck of a game! :goodjob:

In retrospect, I think the numero uno problem you had wasn't tech decisions, or city placement, or slow expansion - it was that by razing all of the cities you couldn't take, you created room for the other AI's too fill in and become very powerful. I don't think I've ever seen an AI with 40% of the land! :crazyeye:

If you had kept some other folks around, you would have slowed Hatty & Mansa down. It's a pain defending your ridiculously long border against crippled but angry civs, but it's better than creating Super-Hatty. :) Since when does the AI have stacks of Modern Armor in the 1940's?

Also, given you have lots of water commerce to work, a Financial civ would have been a very significant boost. If you were Liz or George I think you might have been able to snag a win...

All in all though, a wonderful game. Are y'all going to take another stab at it?
