I have been playing the Romans on Chieftan and cant seem to get my advances flying. Im at 2012 ad and still researching Combustion!

I have my science up at 100%. I have the copernicus and Newton in the same city. Libraries and universities in my cities. What gives???

How do I fly by and get advances fast like in Civ II.

What am I doing wrong? Is it just the Roman civ thats lacking or something else.

On smaller maps research goes a lot faster. Also, don't overdo research because you can't get faster then 4 turns/advancement. The key thing is you need to produce loads of trade, and because of the high corruption (particularly before the patch) you need to use your centralized cities to produce and research.

I had the same problem in early games I was playing, and in fact I have never been able to reach future tech. The slow starts (now 40 turns with the patch) make it much harder to go high speed. But you can do it. You have to make a commitment to building libraries in every town. You have to BE expansionist or play like an expansionist and get as many huts as possible (notice how many techs the English, Russians, Iroquois and Americans seem to have when you meet them). You have to get the Great Library, especially if you find yourself alone on an island (it seems like if you are alone with no one to trade techs with you are pretty much screwed in this version), so research towards literature immediately. Play as a Scientific civ to get the free bumper advances.

Really the biggest factor is the other civs and how fast are they going. On Chieftain level games especially they develop slow which means you cant trade them for techs which means your slow pace sets the pace. Be ready to trade for techs, or conquer and sue for techs, because the pace does get better once you leave ancient times behind. I usually end up ahead of the tech race but I will often then slow down my research in order to rake in "fundamentalist" levels of cash.

Good luck.:)
