I can't seem to find any documentation on what mechanics work / don't work on religious units. Without it, This seems like it's an incomplete/buggy feature currently.

How can I block the AI's religious unit spam?
My borders don't stop them (we do not have any agreements and are not at war)
My military units can't touch them

More importantly, I can't seem to take my apostles into his territory, but he has no problem taking them into mine?

FWIW if you declare war you can kill them instantly with any combat unit, even a Scout. This creates an AoE effect that removes some of the religion from your cities. They're not even expelled from your territory when you declare war so you can wait til they gather up, DoW and kill them all with a single fast moving unit, because the combat unit doesn't lose movement points when it kills them.

and If I don't want to declare war?

I'm more interested in the respecting borders thing. How come my religious units can't enter Greece's territory, but Greece's Religious units can enter mine?

You should be able to take your Apostles, but not your Inquisitors, into his territory. You can't block his units from entering, but your Apostles and Inquisitors (but not Missionaries) can attack his religious units even if you're not at war with him.

Thanks for the clarification.

I can confirm it's apostles and Missionaries, but NOT inquistors. I must have gotten them mixed up.

I still wish I could have some sort of policy or something "State Religion".. that allows combat interaction with foreign religious spreaders without a war declaration.

Is there any way to heal religious units? I thought that I read that a holy site would provide healing, but that didn't work, unless I'm missing something.

It works. You have to park your unit at the or ontop of the site wich follows your religion.

In my game I have Scythia and his horde of at least 50! religious units swarm around unchecked...is it WAD? It's beyond silliness, she'll probably win by that and I do not complain about losing, but that sight is really so not right.

After they convert one of your cities, you can ask them to stop converting your cities. Not sure about mechanics, but if you are scary enough, they will say yes and whole horde that came in your lands will run away after turn or two.

Really can't wait for mods (or expansions) adjust the behavior of religious units and religious spread.

Yes the way to heal your missionaries or Apostles or inquisitors is they have to be adjacent or in to YOUR own Holy sites for at least 1 turn. Saw this on quills norway run and it does work.

Even with giving promises that they will stop converting your cities, AI will just break the promise the next turn. I am just hoping that the attrition effect returns.
Seeing tons of missionaries on your region without able to do anything about it is just silly.

Thank you. I was looking for a 'heal unit' button similar to a military unit, but not seeing one I assumed that heal wasn't an option. This means I've wasted about 2,000 faith on buying apostles when I could have simply re-healed them. Oh well, it's the first game.

AI breaks the promise next turn, but seems the are just "on the way" to some city and convert it. After that they leave and won't come back.

Also with inquisitors it's very easy to keep own cities clean of infidels. They remove all other religions and increase your religion with just one try. Other nation needs a lot of units to convert one city and it's quick to get it back. I think it's only problem if you don't have any faith to counter the missionaries.

Another thing to be aware of is how the religious combat works. The base strength is all important when it comes to a fight. Had an enemy with the extra 20% promo and he was a Jedi, attacking Inquisitors would get near one shotted while leaving them barely scratched. Plus if your units die in the combat there is a big area of effect religious bomb that affects multiple cities. Better to self delete extremely wounded units rather than let them die in a religious combat and get your cities converted to boot.

Yeah, get an apostle with that promotion and keep him in your territory. Your ninja can then take on all comers and love bomb your territory with every kill
