So, which of the two major formats are you cheering for? Blu-Ray (made by Sony) and HD-DVD (made by Toshiba).

However, with manufacturing costs for HD-DVD discs seemingly far lower than Blu-ray, that format also boasts some strength too. Blu-ray offers higher capacity storage than HD DVD – but do we really need all of this space? Only time will tell…

HD-DVD holds 10gigs
Blu-Ray holds 25gigs

Sony, Buena Vista Home Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment support Blu-ray, while Paramount Home Entertainment, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video have signed on with HD-DVD.

what's the price/gb?

Simply looking at price per disc isn't the best way. One layer of data on a Blu-ray is 25 GB, or ~4 hours of high def video and sound. Currently, up to 4 layers are possible, with research on 8 in progess. One layer of HD-DVD is 15 GB, or ~2.5 hours. So far only 2 layer discs are available, with 3 layer in R&D. For comparison, a DVD layer holds 4.7 GB, or ~45 minutes of hi-def video.

The reason Blu-ray is more expensive to manufacture is that they use a thinner data layer, which means current DVD assembly lines have to be retooled. HD-DVD uses the same thickness and can be made on existing DVD lines. This would be a temporary price increase.

Blu-ray discs are also more durable, and because they hold more, movies might actually be cheaper, because they could be on one disc instead of current packages of 2-4. Imagine watching the LOTR special editions without having to change discs in the middle.

I'm going for blu-ray, because (a) it's a more advanced technology, and (b) I trust Sony more than Toshiba

DVD. Its too soon to start replacing my entire DVD library. Even on a HDTV screen, its not like I am going to notice the difference like it was coming from VHS (and even Laserdisc). I'll leave this to my future PS3 and the games. Wake me up with a new format in say, 2010.
