BNW - Losing Holy City status

Well it's happened again. My cap no longer shows it is a holy city. I think it is either tied to Borobudur OR it's tied to a city gaining another religion through trade. This time, my cap was not the site of the new religion, but rather, New York. I was in the process of building Borobudur and at some point, lost it. I wish they'd put in a notification of when your Holy City loses that status. I've loaded up my oldest game save but it happened before then...so I'm thinking it's tied to trade.

Also noticed that the AI can regain it's Holy City status if it loses it. I converted Warsaw and saw that it lost the HC status for Catholicism but now it's back. And to add insult to injury, it's building Borobudur there.

Sadly, I have no autosaves from before I lost my HC status. It happened before turn 250 but after turn 200 as it took forever for an AI to found a religion. I've attached the earliest autosave I have left. My HC should be Washington and at no point has a GP been used on that city to convert it. Only New York has another religion in it, and that's due to trade pressure. Why the AI can recover it's HC status (I used a GP to convert their HC to my religion around turn 270 or so) but I can't is beyond me.

You know, you can reset your autosave interval from the default 10 turns to as few turns as you like and can save an effectively unlimited number of autosaves. Go to the options menu.

Anyway, the AI recovery is easy to answer. GPr does two things: removes followers of other religions and then converts the fresh populace to its religion. But, important: Great Prophets do not remove the city's special holy city character. Holy cities exert internal pressure that will eventully reconvert followers, which is what you observe. (The AI can also speed the reconversion process along by using a GPr of its own, or an inquisitor and missionary.)

The only way to remove holy city character is to use an inquisitor. Since you can only use inquisitors on cities you own, you must first conquer their holy city and then zap it with an inquisitor.

That is the source of my guess, regarding your earlier save file, that you might have inadvertantly used an inquisitor from another religion on your own capital. It can happen with either a captured inquisitor (captured missionaries, inquisitors and GPrs retain their original religion) or an inquisitor bought in a city that happens to have another religion at the time the inquisitor is bought. You try telling the inquisitor to sleep or move, but click the top button instead .... oops.

In your case, since you're pretty sure there were no misclicks, the mystery remains.

I can say without a shadow of a doubt that I've not used an inquisitor on my HC at any point in my current game. At no point has Washington actually gained any followers of other religions. Only New York and (now) San Francisco. As none of my cities have lost their majority religion, only gained a tiny minority of a foreign religion, it's not a misuse of an inquisitor...not that that part matters as the HC never had an inquisitor used on it in the first place.

More and more I'm thinking the loss of the HC status is due to trade pressure. In both games, it seemed to appear after I had a city gain a follower of another religion.

I've set the auto save to save 999 turns so hopefully in the next game, I'll be able to get a save before / after and attach. My gut still says this is somehow connected to the new Trade feature.

I recently had this happen.

Fortunately, I built Borobudur and the Grand Temple. However, I wasn't satisfied with just my religion (Cathedral + Pagoda), plus the Mosque from the Great Mosque. I got an Inquisitor of another religion (which had Monasteries), zapped my capital / holy city, to get Monasteries, and changed back with a Great Prophet (of my religion).

I only noticed many turns later that I had lost Holy City status. In fact, I only noticed it when I passed the World Religion resolution and thought initially the resolution was bugged since it was adding to tourism. Only then did I realize that I had lost Holy City status.

Hope this gets fixed in the next patch! :)

You removed Holy City status using an inquisitor, get surprised about it and want it gone in the next patch? What?

By your description it worked ok in BNW as well, so I don't see what's there to "fix in the next patch".

I think what he wants fixed is to remove the ability of a player to inadvertently kill his own Holy City. Protecting players from making these types of mistakes is hardly a priority IMO.

I too just noticed this issue in my most recent game. My Capital/Holy City lost Holy City Status without any actions by myself or the AI. I didn't notice until I went to build the Grand Temple and it didn't show up as an option.

Except I'm on G&K, not BNW...

I'm wondering if it is some sort of odd IGE bug, since the only active mod Martock and I have in common is IGE?

There is an IGE issue. Some interaction causes IGE modded games to lose Holy City status (but apparently only for the human player). It's shown up in a few posted saves. I experimented with it and it does happen, but its not clear what triggers it. You can found a holy city but it loses HC status at a time that you're not likely to notice (who checks that every turn?). Since I only use IGE to set up experiments to test game features, I haven't spent time to investigate further.

The only times I had my capital lose its holy status was when I tinkered with religion through the IGE.

I play on Gedemon's "Yet (not) Another Earth Maps Pac" maps, of which some haven't got any ancient ruins nor world wonders. In order to gain enough faith to start a pantheon I have to add ancient ruins (which last time led to 54 ancient ruins before I got one which gave some faith, resulting in my cap starving as every two ruins there was a civilian added).

The last time it took me so long to get enough faith to start a pantheon that I created a religion with the IGE (I'm keen on Taoism and every other civ had created either a pantheon or were already buisy creating their own religion --luckily Taoism isn't high on the AI's list).

At that point my cap was the Holy City, but since I was in a hurry I also used the IGE to enhance my religion. That's when my cap lost its Holy City status...

I've restarted several times and never lost Holy status on my cap, except when enhancing the religion through the IGE, so, maybe that's how you lost your Holy status?

Yup it's been established that this issue is due to IGE making a change to the capitol city with regards to religion. While I still use IGE, I don't mess with the religion side of it any more so the problem has disappeared.

I don't think inquisitors are supposed to remove holy city status, it just doesn't make sense as a game mechanic.

Hello everyone. I also have had a mysterious glitch where my holy city (which is also my capital) loses the holy city status for no apparent reason. This happens only in some games. I don't usually notice until Theology/the HC wonders, but I noticed it more recently this last time.

In this game, I have not reached Theology yet (still in the Classical Age), no other religions have been founded by Civs I have met, so no trade routes, inquisitors, etc. It frequently happens when I play Germany (my favourite civ), but it's happened at least once while I was the Shoshone. The mods I use are fairly minor, but also happen without these mods/in vanilla BNW. I have never used the IGE mod.

I actually registered on here just because I found this thread and wanted to add to it. I hope an answer can be found, as I so thoroughly enjoy Civ V and using religion to help take over the world is a part of my strategy :)

UPDATE: I went back to my game, via autosaves, and checked my holy city every turn. It lost its status on the transition from turn 328 to 329, for no apparent reason; my religion is the only one I have contact with, so no GPr or inquisitors or my own doing that way. Quite simply, one turn it says Holy City, the next it doesn't. These are screenshots of the before and after. First, turn 328 where Berlin is the Holy City of Apophis: http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc...09BA3D83B4A43A1B9AB7F6F/1024x639.resizedimage

Now, turn 329, where Berlin is merely a city with Apophis: http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc...2764083E27AE90BDAF4A74E/1024x639.resizedimage

This happens regardless of using the System Lords mod (changes religions to Stargate System Lord religions) and I have played as Germany with Apophis before without this happening.
