Bombing Radio Tower

Has anyone ever bombed a radio tower?

I was using my stealth bombers to pillage the enemy continent, concentrating on luxuries and resources. But when I bomb hexes with radio towers built, they seem to be invulnerable. It says something about a successful bombing run and injuring enemy units. But nothing good happens.

You can only destroy a radio tower by capturing it or enveloping it within your cultural borders. When bombing one, you can kill it's defender and destroy that tiles improvements, but it requires a ground unit to actually destroy it.

and destroy that tiles improvements,

Destroying tile improvements wasn't true for me.

I wasn't interested in destroying the tower. I was wanting to destroy the tile improvements. But I hit it over and over again with stealth bombers; the
report said that I had a successful bombing run. But the improvements stayed in place.

You know, I didn't realize it until I read your answer, but I was bombing the improvements without doing reconnaissance. Because mostly I don't have to. But in this case, you are correct. There was a unit on the tile.

I think I'll start over. The ending of these games is sort of a lot of work. The front part of the game is a lot of fun. The Civ II aid is essential.

This was a semigod game. My empire was more productive than the other remaining power but I was pretty far behind in technology. But I did have stealth and the enemy didn't. My plan was to pillage all his tiles and I had a good start. The capital, Berlin, had no improved tiles. I think I could have systematically of continued.

Thanks for your help.

Man, radio towers.

I've been playing this game for two years - probably 30 campaigns under my belt, and there's still so much of it that I haven's used yet.

The other civ will have units on the radar tower invariably. So you'll need to bomb it four or 5 times.

You must destroy all units garrisoning the radio tower before you can destroy the radio tower itself.

I personally find radio towers useless and have purpose for them.

I don't imagine that the radio towers impact my pillaging campaign. I think it best to just bomb/pillage where they don't have units.

Yes that's true. I also played a lot of original civilization and civ II. I don't think I have enough computer for civ iv.

I used communism in this game more than I have in the past. I used to could win by staying in republic or democracy and winning by space race. But ever since I went up a level in difficulty, that strategy doesn't work as well. After a lot of expansion, the communist government is pretty powerful.

Towers are useful in a massive map. There you will find large tracts of mountains and other terrain that you will not colonize. Put up a tower and cover the are so you can see units coming your way.

In maps less than huge, not much use. I also use them a few times in nasty AW games. Where I will be attacked by large numbers of units. I put up a tower, plant an army on it and gain the extra defense.

You will probably never use them, they are a waste of good workers/slaves. They increase the defensive bonuses of units within their 2 tile range, and in this game, if you are playing defensively, you are probably losing. In my recent Russo/Korean war, the Koreans screwed around building nukes and radar towers while I was dismantling their empire city by city. They had every advantage, a 6-8 tech lead, more territory, Modern Armor, nukes, and they p'd it all away by building radar towers and playing defense.
